Organized FUD - How The "FUD Mafia" Is Plaguing This Industry (Part 1.1, Part 3.1)

It's no surprise that fraudsters and scammers plague this industry. It's no surprise that shilling services are a profitable business. In this article, we're going to tap into the world of "Organized FUD".

What does "FUD" mean?

“FUD” stands for "Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt", it's a well-known disinformation strategy that plagues all industries, but specifically the crypto-industry as a whole, for its volatile nature. Taken from Wikipedia, "FUD is generally a strategy to influence perception by disseminating negative and dubious or false information and a manifestation of the appeal to fear".

There are some notorious players in the industry who operate on a larger scale and that are specifically tasked with guaranteeing that you are misinformed. I'll introduce one of them in this serious of investigations in trying to uncover the truth being "FUD", their "Modus Operandi", “Sensationalist Journalism”, their “vectors of distribution” and “active agents” that help disseminate the "FUD" throughout the industry.

First of all, we appreciate your time (readers) for actively spreading our latest article and reacting to its content in a (generally) positive manner. We’ve had approximately ~400,000 hits since we published the article, which means the crypto-community has an high interest in this kind of research.

Secondly, it seems like we still have unfinished business with Part 1 and Part 3.

James Edwards AKA ProofOfResearch/CryptoMedicated has recently published an article where he desperately tried to obfuscate his older aliases by “dissecting” what he assumed to be flaws and inaccurate evidence on our first article (Part 1).

We don’t want to waste your time reading this, because we have more interesting thing to publish, but for the sake of closure we will “dissect” his article, which is a supposed “dissection” of our article (Part 1). We urge you to read our previous articles to follow-up with the current scenario.

According to James Edwards AKA ProofOfResearch/CryptoMedicated, the “Think!” article on medium.com (now suspended) was fabricated by the community of Whalepool (@WhalePool, a trading community) because they were (allegedly) the first ones to “break” the story. This should’ve been enough for you to toss the entire article, because James Edwards AKA ProofOfResearch/CryptoMedicated is literally saying that every news media outlet and social media accounts that break news, are the ones behind the fabrication of that same content they’re sharing.

So, let’s enlighten him. Our “Modus Operandi” (to propagate our articles) consists in harvesting (through crawlers) social media profiles (mainly on twitter.com) based on specific keywords that will help us categorize said harvested social media profiles. Said keywords are carefully tailored to only show results based on the subject (or multiple subjects) that we’re investigating, and then we label said profiles sentiment as “negative” or “positive” towards the target of investigation. In case of James Edwards AKA ProofOfResearch/CryptoMedicated, we filtered only the profiles that bear “negative” sentiment towards him, and apply a deployment technique (presented partially in Part 2) to get their contact information (email).

This is called targeted marketing, and that’s partially the technique that made some of our articles extremely success in reaching its targeted audience.

Unfortunately for James Edwards AKA ProofOfResearch/CryptoMedicated, It just so happens that @Whalepool was among the first to propagate it 38 minutes after being published, which gives you plenty of reaction time. Now if they read it through email targeting or any other sources, it’s not relevant. What’s relevant is that James Edwards James Edwards AKA ProofOfResearch/CryptoMedicated is intentionally applying ad hominem in that statement, which will mislead unsuspecting readers in believing that the previous content was an absolute, undisputed truth, when in fact is manipulation of information and how it’s displayed. Here’s how he applied his ad hominem:

An avid reader will not fall for such fallacy.

There’s no connection between Think! and @Whalepool. As a matter of fact, we are investigating a member of their community who is suspected of orchestrating a twitter spam & profile report bot that has been suspending/removing members on the twitter.com platform. We also suspect that the same “malicious actor” is responsible for mass email spamming, but since we only have circumstantial evidence (inconclusive), it’s (yet) not enough to release to the public. That same “malicious actor” happens to be a predominant member of the crypto-community.

And to put a nail in the coffin, @Whalepool refused to share any subsequent articles (especially Part 4), as they condemn what we do.

This is also a very common technique to discredit the writer. He circumvents the idea that uncovering critics is a service with absolutely no demand (financial or emotional gain), making the audience question the writer’s motivation. Let me prove you otherwise.

Harry Yeh (@harryyeh) from Binary Financial has put up a bounty of 5 BTC on Spencer MacDonald AKA Voogru AKA AtlasRand1 AKA Bitfinexed (name reference: Part 4).

We decided to let it out for free. Again, we’re not for sale. Yet we just “indubitably” proved James Edwards AKA ProofOfResearch/CryptoMedicated that he’s wrong, there’s profit to be made out of it, we just refused to. We’re in for the emotional gain, the dopamine we get when we find something we’re not supposed to find.

It could as well be a friend posing as him, or a paid actor. The computer that contains the “twitter profile” in the background is inconclusive due to the blurry nature of the camera. Also, the video only has 4 seconds and there is nothing conclusive besides a guy saying a name and the name of a project.

I’ll launch James Edwards AKA ProofOfResearch/CryptoMedicated an official challenge: he should go on voice and camera (something that he claimed he has done before, so it shouldn’t be a problem) and he should talk about a specific project in the crypto-community that we’ll chose as soon as he’s LIVE. The whole LIVE process has to contain video and audio, and he has to answer questions about said project (questions are asked by us, LIVE). The subject will be a random project that he wrote about in the past. If he does that, we guarantee that we’ll never write about him, ever again, and we’ll offer him 1 BTC for the trouble.

But we’re absolutely sure he’s not going to do it, because the person in the video isn’t James Edwards AKA ProofOfResearch/CryptoMedicated.

Again, an ad hominem argument. He couldn’t prove that he isn’t James Edwards AKA ProofOfResearch/CryptoMedicated. His “evidence” is inconclusive as it needs to meet certain criteria to make it even the slightest eligible for being conclusive. The fact that he discards circumstantial evidence in Part 1 and (Part 3, which he didn’t even address), makes it suspicious of an ad hominem attempt.
