Is Cyberpunk making a comeback.....into real life?
More than likely no, at least not in the bad ass way that nostalgic fans would hope, but the spirit does seem to be permeating through the "noosphear" at this time, so don't go all sad Neo on us. With more obvious things popping up in pop-culture like the highly-anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 release approaching, and the Blade Runner sequel drumming up enough interest to get released last year, its clear that more and more people have a thing for the high-tech-noir atmospheres that pioneers like Katsuhiro Otomo and Neal Stephenson dreamed up decades ago.

Ah, but you may ask yourself what does that have to do with reality? well quite a bit actually, you see the things that we consume in our entertainment directly link to our state of mind on a large scale. It seems to be a good way to measure the general sentiment, mood, perspective, tolerance, ect. of the populace at any given time. Of course this is nothing new, adepts working in marketing have been observing the patterns of what works with the crowd, and what does not for ages, the true black arts if you will. But now with the exponential speed that technology is evolving at, this observation becomes more clear. However, that is beyond the scope of this. What we have here, with shows like Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror gaining crazy buzz by just word of mouth, Elon Musk's whole deal, and the merging of the digital world with reality through Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality , things are starting to look a lot closer to our Sci-Fi than ever before.
Its so real man
These few examples of fiction bleeding over into our world just scratch the surface of the way we deal with the paranoia and the wonder of emerging technologies. The observation of that fact is not new either, as some anon person years ago coined the phrase: "the Roddenberry effect", in reference to the fact that the technology we pull into reality always seems to resemble tech from Star Trek lore.
So to answer the question. Yes, I do think Cyberpunk is coming back and is manifesting in the real world in scary/wonderful ways, but It just tends to look more like Transmetropolitan and less like Ghost In The Shell. I'm ok with this, because if Robert Anton Wilson taught us (maybe) anything , its how to navigate the world when hyperstition and the erosion of whats up and down prevail .
Only the madman is absolutely sure.
Good thing we are always connected to the hive and E-cig juice is still relatively cheap.
good thoughts on cyberpunk culture. Can we manifest the cool and fashionable parts of cyberpunk culture without the dystopian nightmare?
I don't know, It kinda seems like the cool and fashionable parts of cyberpunk are a byproduct of the dystopian nightmare. I wish though.
