Help in the household - What can children do when?

It used to be a matter of course, today there are different models. The fact that children help in the home is far from self-evident in every family. The cooperation in the family promotes cohesion, gives the children a sense of community and strengthens their sense of responsibility and self-confidence.

In other cultures it is a matter of course that everyone helps together. In Western civilization, children are often deprived of everything. The kids just have to take care of their homework, possibly a pet and maybe their room.

If children are to help in the household and also like to do so, the atmosphere must be right and the children must be involved from an early age in the domestic tasks. It is important that the assistance of the children are always adapted to the age, because one of the most important motivations here is the sense of achievement. If the children fail by doing too heavy tasks, they quickly lose the desire to work.

Real tasks promote motivation

In order to make a child happy to help in the household, it should feel that his job is really important. Do not let your child do anything that you do not like yourself. It will absorb your feelings and associate negative emotions with the task itself. The consequence of this is that it does not feel like helping with this matter. The basic reluctance to help in the household is almost preprogrammed.

If you manage to help your child, it will develop a variety of abilities over time:

  • Development of a sense of responsibility and duty

  • Trust in one's own abilities

  • Divide time and own forces

Often the question arises as to whether children should be paid for assistance. It is not recommended that children receive a wrong message. When children help, it's out of a sense of community or helpfulness and not because they gain an advantage.

Which tasks at which age?

As soon as children grasp what their parents say to them, tasks can be assigned to them. Even one and a half year olds manage to put away a toy and at the age of 2 children can take their plates and their glass away from the dining table. At this age, children usually like to help and so a good basis is laid for later assistance. From the age of 4, children can also be responsible for something alone. This can be for example the table cover.

It is important to accustom the children from an early age to clear away their own toys. The parents help with and it does not matter how much the children effectively put away - it's about the doing and the will of the children, to help. The older the children become, the more responsible the assigned tasks can be. What kind of child can take over, the parents have to decide individually. Avoid too high demands. You can not expect perfection from children yet, but efforts and cooperation.

Motivation to help

So that children enjoy the help in the household, many tasks can also be done playfully. If too many rules and too high expectations are set, then children quickly lose the desire to help. Just tidying up your own chaotic room overwhelms children quickly. They do not know where to start. Help the parents with, it's easier and the favorite music and playful deposits make tidying up then almost a pleasure. If little children do not feel like it and refuse, then coercion is not the right remedy. Even ranting helps little. Consider logical consequences that can follow the refusal. For example, if the child refuses to put away his paint things, then it can not start a new game.

Incidentally, parents should not worry too much about the child's later sense of order. If children grow up in an orderly environment and parents provide a suitable role model, then it will evolve by itself over time.

I love this post! So many times has it been hard to keep my kids cleaning and doing chores. Making a game of it does help. Just wish I knew more games to keep it interesting. I dont want to feel like I need to give them something as a reward in return. So the games are helpful.
Awesome write up! Thank you for this.
