Origin of Kathak: An ancient Indian Classical Dance Form
कथा कहे सो कथक कहावे। (One who tells a story is known as Kathak.)
Kathak is a beautiful Classical Dance form of North India!
What does Kathak mean?
Kathak is basically a storyteller who has been communicating ancient stories from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, Puranas and Vedas through the beautiful use of music i.e. via Dancing and Singing since त्रेता युग(Treta Yug).
These 'Kathakars' were known as 'Kushilavas', as the name suggests this tradition of story telling traces back to Luv And Kush, the sons of Lord Rama who had once sung the story of the Ramayana written by the sage Valmiki in the court of Lord Rama. Sage Valmiki hence came to be known as the first Kathak.
From here this tradition was adopted and spread by the Kushilavas who went on from village to village narrating these stories to the people using Dancing and singing as the media.
