Sirtaki - Dance Weekend Greek Style

Dance Weekend Greece

Hiya Music Community on Steemit - actually I wanted to post yesterday to my Dance Weekend covering the lovely country of Greece - however my princess at home made me sleep very early - I even missed the German Soccer Cup Final and woke up this morning without doing what I planned - that is life.

But it is Sunday, still Weekend so here some music from Greece finally. It is different as I originally planned it - so not really a Dance Weekend Electronic Music post (well it is also a part) but more about general Dance from the great country that was mainly responsible across Europe for developing democracy no matter this concept is discussed and not always popular these days as very centralised and more.

Living in Germany we are proud and happy to have many Greek people here that add so much value with their food, their lifestyle and music. See a lovely flashmob in Augsburg dancing the Greek way. This happened in 2016 at the Independence Day of Greece (original March 25, 1821). See Greek dancers, young and old, join some Syrtaki together with the music of Zorba.

What is Sirtaki (Syrtaki)?

With a little help of Wikipedia some facts on this popular Dance from Greece

Sirtaki or syrtaki has been choreographed by Giorgos Provias for the 1964 film Zorba the Greek. the relatively new Dance Style is a folk dance containing a mix of the slow and fast rhythms of the hasapiko and hasaposerviko dance respectively. The dance is also called Zorbá's dance based on the accompanying music by Míkis Theodorakis. The word "sirtáki" comes from the Greek word syrtos (drag (or lead the dance)" based on the so-called "dragging" style, as opposed to pidikhtos, a hopping or leaping style. Despite that, sirtaki incorporates both syrtos (in its slower part) and pidikhtós (in its faster part) elements.

Other Greek Dances

There are a lot folk and traditional dance styles created in the country of Sokrates which are still used for several occasions there - mainly to celebrate, something the Greek are really great in - it is touch and heart warming if you are part of such celebrations and parties - but be careful, you might look stupid doing the Greek but fun counts and building bridges with other cultures too. She of the other Greek Dances include:

  • Angelica
  • Antistrophe
  • Carper
  • Choreia
  • Cordax
  • Dionysiakos
  • Hyporchema
  • Korybantes
  • Pyrrhichios
  • Syrtos

I am glad to live in Munich where we have a vibrant Greek community that is organising tons of Street Festivals which are open for everybody where they offer their local Music - Dance - Food - Germany contributed the Beer sometimes.

Modern Greek Dance Music

There are a lot of great Techno and Trance DJs in and from the country but there is also a very active local music scene combining modern beats with traditional local music elements - style wise I would count most belonging to Balkan music which is always a reason to move your bones! Here some more typical Dance Pop from Greece in the Mix (no Techno)!.

Feel free to post using #DanceWeekend about your favourite Dance Music - the tag is open to any genre across the World - just keep it original!

I love flash mobs and Greek music! We have a large Greek population, it was part of my growing up and have gone to Greek weddings and festivals to enjoy the tempo and the extreme happiness in their steps!

Thanks for the longer set of music! I am listening in the background!

Opa!!!

Glad you have learned their way of life @dswigle - and great to read you actually made it until the end - sometimes I think people never read anything apart from the first sentence or commenting on a photo or video they see only...... but that is live in social media these days, isn't it?

If I click on it, I read it. I would like to give people the same courtesy that I expect. In a perfect world, of course!

Have a great Sunday, Uwe!

very well said Denise :-) - Think we are pioneers of so many platforms throughout the last years that we have an eye on that more than others.

While you are living in Germany, many Greeks are proud and happy with their food, their lifestyles and music. Really complimentary. I like most Greek song. Modern Greek Dance Music really so much beautiful.
