Designing Your Living Room? Here Are Four Expert Tips

in #decor5 years ago

We all know that designing internal rooms if your house can be a painstakingly difficult job. Uncertainty and indecisiveness are two words that spring to mind when I think about how I felt when I was trying to decipher how I was going to design and decorate my living room. It took me months (and I mean three to four months!) to finally decide the layout and colour scheme I was going to go for. And, if you’re anything like me, you’ll know just what it’s like!

Well, I have great news! If you do find yourself in the unenviable position of not being able to decide what to do with your living, you’ve come to the right blog. I have put together four expert tips - tips that I think will help you to crack on with the designing process and get started on your dream living room. Enjoy!

Pay attention to the walls and ceilings: No, we don’t just mean give them a lick of paint and be done with it! The living room is typically the centre and most public room of any house; therefore, you’ve got to put 110% effort into it. Although solid block colour walls can certainly look nice (provided they complement the rest of the room - layout, furniture etc.), the living room is somewhere that should be jazzed up…if that’s your thing, of course. Don’t be afraid to try different patterns, prints, designs and layouts where wallpaper is concerned; you’d be surprised just how much difference a wall of expressive wallpaper can make.

Flooring: Where flooring is concerned, there are two words I want you to focus on: comfort and style; flooring in your living room must tick both of these boxes. How you decide upon which carpet or style of flooring to choose will depend on the rest of the decor and your design thoughts. Do you want the walls and furniture to stand out and eye-catching elements in the room, or do you want the flooring to be the focal feature (or one of the primary focal features)? If you’re in the former camp, choose a solid, neutral colour for your flooring; if you’re in the latter camp, go for something bold and outlandish (floral or stripes, perhaps).

Furniture: When putting your living room together, don’t just throw furniture in willy-nilly. Because the living room is somewhere where people congregate, you need to arrange furniture in a way that it promotes interaction(s) between guests. To do so, pull seating away from the walls and make sure they’re facing each other. If your living room is an unusually large space, try breaking it into separate areas to make each segment feel as intimate as if it were a smaller room.

Windows: ‘To dress or not to dress’, that is the question. In years gone by, it was the done thing to heavily dress the windows in a living room or living space area. Although doing so isn’t as prevalent today as it once was, that doesn’t mean that you can’t do it. Window dressing adds a certain luxury and elegance to a room (if done correctly, i.e. stylishly and tastefully), so if you want to make a statement with your living room design and decor, it’s certainly something to consider seriously. What can you use? Fabrics, drops, curtains and the like - provided that they look good and continue the aesthetic of the room.

If you can find four better tips than that (in 600 words or less), I’ll eat my hat!
