Unwell Rested.

As I aimlessly made my way to work the other day, I had a rather enlightening moment from a seemingly insignificant place. There was this box truck. Small, white, and distressed from abuse and age. Ordinary thing to see traveling down the freeway at any given moment. This particular truck was owned by a small mattress store with advertisements of people looking ever so comfortable and happy to be lying on a new quilted foam block that for some reason, like all mattress ads, never have sheets on them. Even though I did notice that odd detail, that wasn't what caught my eye. Written across the image was the slogan, "A better life starts with a good nights sleep." Inferring somehow that a new bed is the answer. Now I will admit, I do agree with the phrase. Being well rested is healthy, but sitting there in my car as the miles went by, questions began to arise. What if you're restless at night? What if you can't fight off your demons? Why do we lay there, awake, unable to settle? What if you are haunted? What if the thoughts don't stop? What really keeps you up? ... Does where you lay your head or what you lay on really matter? Maybe it's a peace of mind and not a piece of foam that lets you sleep at night. As I write all this, the sun is rising up... I haven't slept and I have been lying here... Thinking maybe it's time for a new mattress.
