Depressed - Episode 4: Addiction.
Tobacco, cannabis, alcohol, gambling, videogames, and many others... Depression leads to addiction, before you even notice it.
That's normal. That's how your brain works.
Fleeing from your sadness, from this unbearable constant pain, you eventually finish by imprisoning in addiction.
Before I started taking meds, I used to go have drinks with my friends in pubs almost every night. That was the only way to get myself away from this shadow behind me. The only way to get me to sleep.
Now I stopped drinking, thanks to the meds, but I keep up locking myself into addictions. Almost every night, you can find me at a BlackJack table, staying there for hours, leaving my seat just to smoke another cigarette. Too much cigarettes.
The only way to get yourself out of these addictions, is to realize you're an addict. Then, understand why. Why do you need to drink this glass, why do you need to put another 25$ in gambling? And, do you really need it?
Take control of your addictions. Yep, another hard path to follow. But, like all the others, it's important. You gotta fight your depression, you'll lose, feel like sh*t for a while, then try again, until someday you'll see the light. This day, the air you breathe will feel so pure, the sunrays on your face will feel so good... The pain will leave you, you will finally be able to look at yourself in the mirror without wanting to spit on your own face.
We can be healed. It can be cured. But we have to find the will to fight, and stop hiding behind our addictions.
