Get to know Amsterdam in Ambon
This Amsterdam location is not in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. This is a historic fort in Ambon, Maluku. Amsterdam is part of the history of VOC control in Ambon, Maluku. The fort, which was built hundreds of years ago, is located about 42 kilometers from the city of Ambon. Precisely in the area of Hila, Leihitu sub-district, Central Maluku district, Maluku province. The rectangular fortress is like an ordinary house building, so the Dutch people call it 'Block Huis'. Amsterdam has three floors with each floor having its own benefits. The very top is a lookout tower. Each wall has a curved window on it and has wide open shutters so that fresh air flows freely and the sunlight gives daylight. The red roof is the result of renovation, not like the original. When the Dutch abandoned this fortress in a damaged state filled with plants, until 1991-1994 restoration was carried out by the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia. to be used as a cultural heritage part of the history of the Indonesian nation. Amsterdam is now one of the tourist attractions that can be visited when going to Ambon. With a long historical background this fortress has become a witness to Indonesia's natural wealth which was forcibly controlled by the VOC. Ambon Bay is one of the most profitable trade routes, which made the VOC and the Portuguese previously interested in mastering it. Initially the fortress of Amsterdam was a kind of Portuguese warehouse which also served as a defense from foreign attacks. But finally it can be controlled by the Dutch and at the same time be used as a defensive fortress against the attacks of the people of Maluku.
