It's to keep him safely in the yard and out of the road... he was chasing motorcycles and ATVs before the collar, and I was afraid he was going to be injured or cause an accident for some unsuspecting motorcyclist...
It's been a godsend, since now he stays in the yard and doesn't go seeking out whatever nastiness he can find to roll in... I just wish I bought it sooner...
