I was as naive as any noob can be when going to one of these events for the first time (As I mentioned in pt1). I was shocked by the countless costumes and underestimated creating fan art because I have always inspired to create original art. Later I made peace with that useless idea (that fan art is not original), and finally understood that fan art can still have your unique style and ideas to make it orginal, even if the characters are not your own. And believe me, fans LOVE fan art. Why wouldn't they? It's an original craft of their favorite characters, specially if you make a unique handmade piece.

And so after six more years of conning, I've learned a couple of things, that have helped me to have a smoother experience in the otakuworld. Some of these things can help not only in cons, but in any art expos in general.

Cuando fui a uno de éstos eventos por primera vez, era tan ingenuo como cualquier principiante (como mencioné en la primera parte). Estaba impresionado por los interminables disfraces y subestimé crear fan art porque siempre he querido crear arte original. Más tarde hice las paces con ésta idea inútil (que el fan art no es original), y finámente entendí que el fan art puede tener tu estilo e ideas únicas y eso es lo que lo hace orginal, aunque los personajes no sean tu propia creación. Y créanme, a los fans les ENCANTA el fan art. ¿Por qué no? Son piezas originales de sus personajes favoritos, especiálmente si es única y hecha a mano.

Y luego de seis años de cons, he aprendido unas cuantas cosas, que me han ayudado a tener una experiencia más amena en el mundo de los otaku. Algunas de éstas cosas quizás también pueden ayudar no sólo en convenciones, si no también en exposiciones de arte en general.

Tips I've learned in six years at cons:

Fan Art is a must if you want to sell a lot. Maybe not for every artist, though

So as I mentioned, fan art can be quite original if you put a little effort to it. Perhaps the characters are not your own, but there's still infinite variations in appearance and situations that you can play with to call it your own original creation (except for the character itself, of course). I have seen, however, many artists who only make large copies of character images, and not add any bit of new ideas to them. I personally don't like doing this because I'd rather buy a poster than pay a lot for a not-so-creative copy of an image some other artist created. I'd rather buy genuine posters from the creators of the characters.

With this I really don't mean to underestimate who do this, because that itself requires talent, but I personally believe they should at least try to add style, not only copy another piece. If this is ok for you, know that fans still love 'em, because of course, why wouldn't they love a poster-sized hand-painted image of their favorite character hanging on their wall? But how about a poster-sized hand-painted ORIGINAL image of their favs? ;) You choose. And I must tell you, I've seen some high sellers of these kind of images.

Now for the original non-fan art, I've had to stick to taking more than a couple pieces, because my art in general doesn't attract too many people. My doodles are childish, colorful and innocent (mostly), but many prefer conceptual, dark, intricate, detailed and/or realistic artwork. A lot of people don't even bother to look at my art closely, and that's ok because everybody has their own likes (and dislikes).

El fan art es indispensable si querés vender bastante

Como mencioné antes, el fan art puede ser original si hacés un poco de esfuerzo. Quizás los personajes no son tuyos, pero aún así hay infinitas variaciones en apariencia y situaciones con las que podés jugar, para que podás considerar tu creación como propia (excepto los mismos personajes, claro). A pesar de ésto, he visto cómo muchos artistas sólo hacen copias grandes de imágenes de personajes, sin agregar un poco de nuevas ideas. Personálmente no me gusta hacer ésto porque yo preferiría comprar un poster que pagar por una copia no tan creativa que otro artista creo. Preferiría comprar un poster genuino de los creadores de los personajes.
 
Con ésto no quiero subestimar a la gente que hace ésto, porque eso por sí mismo requiere talento, pero personálmente creo que al menos deberían intentar agregar su propio estilo en vez de sólo copiar una pieza existente. Si ésto está bien para ustedes, deben saber que a los fans aún así les encantan, porque claro, por qué no les gustaría una imagen tamaño poster pintada a mano de su personaje favorito guindada en su pared? Pero qué tal una imagen tamaño poster pintada a mano ORIGINAL de sus favoritos? ;) Ustedes escogen. I debo decirles, he visto personas que venden grandes cantidades de éstas imágenes.

Y acerca del arte original propio, he decidido crear menos de éstas piezas para los eventos, porque mi arte atrae a pocas personas. Mis garabatos son infantiles, coloridos, e inocentes (la mayoría del tiempo), pero muchos prefieren trabajos conceptuales, oscuros, intrínsicos, con mayor detalle y/o realísticos. Muchas personas ni se toman un tiempo para observar mis piezas de cerca y está bien, porque cada quien tiene sus propios gustos (y digustos).

People look for art related to the main guests of the event (cosplayers, voice-over artists, etc.) to have them autographed

This is another thing I underestimated on my first two cons. Fans sometimes even PAY to have artwork autographed by the main guests. You wouldn't even believe the endless rows of fans that wait to have their turn to have their autograph. How about a poster of Homer Simpson, a sticker of Goku autographed by the voice-over artists, or a Batman painting autographed by a DC Comics artist? These are all high-valued items that you can provide fans with. Don't go overboard by printing too many of these or you might end up with too many and not sell them afterwards. I still have some Dexter's Lab prints I made when Dee-dee's voiceover artist came to MegaconHN in 2015 (Not sure of the year), and some Joker (Batman) prints (it wasn't so good though hehe).

Ésto es otra cosa que subestimé en mis primeras dos convenciones. Los fans algunas veces hasta PAGAN para que los invitados especiales autografien piezas de arte. No creerían las colas interminables de fans que esperan su turno para obtener sus autógrafos. ¿Qué tal un poster de Homero Simpson, un sticker de Goku augrafiados por sus respectivos artistas de doblaje, o una pintura de Batman autografiada por un artista de DC Comics? Éstos son objetos que los fans dan mucho valor al tener éstos autógrafos. Tampoco es de imprimir tantos de éstos, o podrían terminar no vendiéndolos al final. Yo todavía tengo algunas impresiones de el Laboratorio de Dexter que hice cuando vino "la voz" de Dee-Dee al MegaconHN en 2015 (No estoy tan seguro del año), y algunos del Guasón (en realidad éste no estaba muy bueno hehe)

Getting early to the event will let you be ready and set up when the gates open

This is pretty straight forward. I've had trouble before because I still haven't found a good method to showcase my work. I use a modular shelf which I set up as a "panel" where I hang posters using clothespins. It takes a little while to do this, as I use little pieces of cardboard under each, to protect the artwork. I used to hang them with tape and it took even longer.

On MegaconHN, which is a large event, it's important to be set up soon, because once they open the gates, the place starts to get filled up quickly. You don't want to loose any potential client, and not having set up will make some people walk by without looking at my work and maybe not come back.

Ésto es muy claro. He tenido algunos problemas antes porque no he encontrado un muy buen método para exponer mi trabajo. Uso un sistema modular de estante, el cual armo como un "panel" donde guindo los posters usando ganchos para ropa. Ésto me toma un buen rato para armar, pues uso pequeños pedazos de cartulina bajo cada gancho para proteger las obras impresas. Solía usar cinta adhesiva para guindarlos y me tomaba todavía más tiempo.

Como MegaconHN es un evento grande, es importante estar listo temprano, porque cuando abren las puertas principales, el lugar comienza a llenarse rápidamente. No querés perderte ningún cliente potencial, y si no estás listo a tiempo alguna gente sólo pasa por tu puesto sin voltear a ver y quizás ni regresen.
