Hobos can't be wiped out by an enemy attacking you. Particularly for smaller players, it is very common for big accounts to wipe out your entire army for no reason (even if all resources are well below the safe level and the attacker earns nothing). Putting extra resources into hobos is actually better than putting them into other units until the account is producing enough resources to recruit enough units to avoid being wiped regularly.
