Hello! Before I talk about this drawing here I just want to mention that I'm going camping for 4 days starting tomorrow so I won't be active at all or posting until I get back. Now onto this piece here!

I have been so busy this summer and especially in these last couple of weeks. A few days ago I got my first free day all to myself! I had two full days to do whatever I wanted. So since I felt like I hadn't done any proper finished work lately I decided to do a watercolour piece.

I've really been falling in love with the colour yellow so I wanted to make this a very yellow based piece.

I started out by planning the piece. I tried out some different colour combinations and techniques.

Then I started on the sketch. I had some trouble getting the pose quite right so it took me a couple tries. I used a reference picture that I took of myself in that pose.

Taking reference photos of yourself is always so weird! And I always draw in comfy clothing so I don't look the best.

I wanted to incorporate an actual bee in the piece to go with the honey combs so I gave her a bee necklace.

I often draw flowers behind a lot of my characters to fill the space and because flowers are pretty. I wanted some neutral coloured flowers so that it wouldn't clash with all the yellow so I picked these white lilies which even had a bit of yellow in them to match.

After the rough sketch I use a kneaded eraser to soften the lines and go over them again to clean them up. I always use a 0.3 lead pencil because I like how clean and thin I can make the lines.

For this piece I wanted to make sure that the yellow colour would really pop against her skin so I went ahead and covered the honey combs and the bee in miskit to make sure those spots don't get any other colours on them.

20180816_143600.jpg
I lay down the background colour which I chose to use a warm saturated orangish yellow. I wanted it to be really solid.

Then I put down the colours for her. I tried to get the colours to be fairly dark but it was a little hard to do.

After I coloured the skin I removed the miskit, unfortunatly the miskit removes a little bit of the pigment from the pencil so I have to go over the honey combs again.
Then I colour in the honey combs. The pictures here are a little darker since I took them later in the day and the lighting wasn't the best.

Since I had a hard time getting the colours to layer and get darker escpecially since I was working with darker colours so my mom suggested I finish it with coloured pencils.

I always get nervous doing this because watercolour paper is so grainy but I gave it a try and I think I might be doing it for all of my pieces now!

This piece took me 2 whole days but I'm really happy with how it turned out!

I hope you enjoyed!

It is beautiful piece. I like that you choose white flowers, so that the drawing itself stands out more

Thank you! I really wanted the middle to be the main focus so I'm glad that came through

Gorgeous piece, @justaboutart <3 Beautiful colours, and such a deft handling of the spectrum of honeyed colours from golden brown to bright yellow * ___ * Love the composition, the strange bisected face revealing that she's made out of honeycomb is my favourite part <3

Love the bee on her necklace and the dripping honey <3 Love her skin tone and beautiful face and hair~ and her dress is very pretty too <3

Gorgeous flowers as background and I really like how you presented the step by step! Really nice to be able to follow your thought processes at each stage * ___ *

Also appreciate the close up views that you included in this post <3 Beautiful work !

Thank you so much!!! It really means a lot to hear that you appreciate it so much! Thank you for the support :)

That is a beautiful creation and it is very good of you to be able to come up with your own self-portrait drawing. I thought it would be better to have a different color on the background and the lady's outfit but you just did it perfectly well with the same color. I also like the yellow shade as it is nearing gold.

The split face amuses me. I take it as split personality of hiding pain. Is it? Or maybe you can also tell us the story of that.

Thank you! I'll leave the meaning of this painting to your imagination :) I didn't have a set meaning in mind so it's really interesting to hear what you think!

You're welcome. I'll keep the story as split personality then. 😊

This is very creative. I like this painting very much. Enjoy your camping :D

Thank yoooou!

i love the way you approche your designs but in the first sight of your painting i have noticed that the face that is cut don't feel like its cut because theres no shadows of the other part of the face into the yellow part, if you show the dept of it, and make it the center of the peice. beside that i really like your style and the way you express yourself with watercolor can't wait to see more of your art work <3 <3 <3

Aah yes I see what you mean, I didn't do any shading on the honey combs. Thank you so much for the feedback! I will keep it in mind for my next pieces to make sure I can properly portray the depth.

Lovely piece of work @justaboutart! The face split in half, to me, seems like two different face have joined together, and can possibly represent two sides of human personality - the good and the bad. I also like the title of the photo and then the bee necklace. Nice work.

Thank you so much! That is such an interesting concept I love hearjng all the interpretations of my piece!

What a beautiful surrealistic drawing. I enjoy looking at the creation process as much as viewing the finished version. The colours that you chose, yellow, brown and green are also very nice :D.

Thank you very much! I am so glad you enjoy my piece!
