My sketch: The Historic Cairo

This is the district that was developed during the hay days of the Islamic Period, mostly from 10th to 15th century. This includes the Mamluk Period from 1250-1517. The Mamluks were trained military slaves and would rule in the absence of their masters. They were of Turkic origin, ruled over Egypt for 300 years until they were defeated by the Ottomans.
There are a lot of Islamic elements in the design of the buildings of that period, and needless to say, a lot of mosques in the area, the telltale minarets could show how prominent they are. Most mosques are still functional today.
