Flat Earth Horizon and Angular Size Experiments part 1

in #dtube7 years ago

There are a lot of misconceptions shared by both globe and flat Earth believers about what we see and should see when we look upon the horizon. Some argue that if the Earth was flat, we could see forever. Others claim that if the Earth were a sphere, it would be self evident.

The purpose of this video is to illustrate how quickly the ground in front of us rises to eye level and shrinks dramatically towards the vanishing point over relatively short distances. I use Unreal Engine 4 which is a very powerful and free to use 3D game and design engine. I'm currently looking for anyone who wants to donate a few simple 3D models of various shapes for future demonstrations. I struggle with blender :(

This video is a starting path to a much broader discussion about perspective, angular size, horizon, vanishing point and eventually the effects of refraction and the atmosphere. I am attempting to break these topics down into 5 minute or so length videos that will start with the basics and slowly progress to more advanced topics. I'm learning as I go here so I'm open to constructive criticism and discussion. More to come!

@dwinblood keeps posting about models. Maybe he has some he can give you / set you up with / free ones you might not know about

Be sure to include in any modeling that the ground does not rise to eye level, but the horizon drops. This is observable, measurable, repeatable, falsifiable, predictable science that has been measured for over 200 years with a precision instrument called a theodolite

I'm not sure if you 'literally' meant rises TO eye level, or if that was just a general statement, but the horizon does not rise all the way to eye level, and it progressively drops as one gets higher in elevation. It's one of the pieces of evidence for how we know the earth is round.

This is an experiment anyone can do to see for themselves. No need to get an expensive theodolite, but just install an app on your phone or, even better, spend a little bit of money on something called an auto level, or you could even just tape a rifle sight to a level, ensuring that the cross hairs truly are level.

Here's an example of the phone app showing horizon drop at elevation. I'm sure that I could find the chart for the amount the horizon drops at the different altitudes if you want me to dig up that info.

If you prefer, you can even design your own leveling rig or water level, and see it without the need for technology, as in the image below.
