Reward Comparison: 1 DTube Upvote vs. 1 YouTube View

in #dtube7 years ago (edited)

Recently I’ve been thinking about the earning potential of a big YouTuber that comes over to DTube. Usually someone with a following will attract some big upvotes, but what about the thousands of followers that a YouTuber can bring with them to the platform.

Today I’m going to look at a comparison between how much a YouTuber can earn from a single view, versus how much they can earn from a single upvote from a new user on DTube.

Reward Comparison

On YouTube, you can choose to display ads on your videos to earn some money. After searching around a bit, it seems that earnings on YouTube vary dramatically from creator to creator depending on a bunch of different factors, but the general range is between $1 and $5 per thousand views. This article was helpful in finding these numbers. With a range from $1 to $5 per thousand views, we have that a single view will earn a YouTuber between $0.001 and $0.005.

On Steem, new user accounts have about 15 SP. I used the upvote calculator on Steem Now to find that the upvote of a new user is worth roughly $0.003. (It only shows two decimal places so I calculated it for 150 SP and then moved the decimal on the upvote value). This value is based on the current Steem price of course, so changes in Steem will mean changes in the new account upvote value. Also, keep in mind that with the higher SBD price right now, a $0.003 upvote is actually worth more than that. In most cases authors will receive about 75% of the payout from the post, with the rest going to curation rewards.

It’s pretty interesting to see that this number falls right within the range of the average YouTube view value.

Platform Comparison

So if the average value of a single YouTube view is comparable to a 100% upvote on a brand new Steem account, let’s take a look at the differences between the platforms.

The first difference is that a video on YouTube can generate money for as long as it’s showing ads — there isn’t a 7 days payout limit like on DTube. Also, it’s more difficult to get an upvote than a view. On YouTube users don’t have to have an account to watch a video, and they aren’t limited in how many views per day they can hand out. This is a pretty big deal considering how many users there are on YouTube. On DTube people have to register and then remember to vote for a post, or decide which posts they want to give their limited voting power for the day.

A big thing in DTube’s favor is that a new user can start earning money immediately. They made some changes recently on YouTube that require 4,000 hours of overall watch time within the past 12 months and at least 1,000 subscribers to be eligible to display ads. Also, a post on DTube with only one upvote can have a huge payout if it’s from a whale. Another really important point is that no money needs to come out of someone’s pocket to pay for these upvotes. The price we pay on YouTube for this fact is the need to watch ads before videos.

So it’s pretty hard to compare the reward potential on YouTube and DTube directly because they do things so differently, but it’s cool to see that even a new user on DTube can hand someone about as much as a view on YouTube would earn.

In any case, it will be fun to see how DTube develops this year! 🙂

Thanks for watching!

In 2 words: YouTube sucks (sorry) – especially after the last change of their terms of service

However: YouTube has some huge advantages concerning mobile devices. I have to admit: They saw it coming and put a lot of improvements into that sector.
e.g.: With the YouTutbe App - it's real simple to stream a Video from your mobile to your TV - in HD.

To catch up to that, DTube has some work to do. Well, I have full confidence in that, that’s why I quit uploading to YT.

Great thought-provoking comparision video! Like it!

Thanks for watching! 😀

there are multiple benefits of DTUBE over youtube yes... but lets also now see some disadvantages.
these can be listed only by some one who has actively uploaded vids in youtube and Dtube.

  1. Youtube loading time is much less also if there is ever any problem while video is beeing uploaded, when you refresh or restart the upload procedure , the loading starts from where it had stopped. This is not the case in Dtube. even if you refresh or some problem occurs at very last moment you will need to upload entire video again. The time it consumes is massive so big videos cant be uploaded that easily.
  2. Its difficult to bring your audience base to a new platform that easily. lets face it every famous Youtuber has massive competition , its very normal for its audience to simply switch to the competition rather than switch to Dtube.
  3. Dtube interface is far inferior to Youtube at this point...and needs loads of work.
  4. Mobile viewing is the key for success of Youtube... another place where Dtube is way behind Youtube.
  5. Monetisation model of Dtube is yet to be established , time will tell if it can sustain the model it choosess.

So yes future may be bright for Dtube, but it would need hardware and dedicated development and support to be any where close to Youtube!

Yes, very true! There's definitely a lot of work to be done, but it's still very new. YouTube has been around since 2005 and now has hundreds of people working on the site, but DTube was just started last year. DTube is being built on very new technology, so personally I'm willing to give it a pass if there are some hiccups considering that we get this cool new type of platform in exchange. Also, DTube actually already has a monetization model that's built into the blockchain. Sites like DTube and Utopian.io take a small percentage of the rewards on the site to pay for servers and development costs.

I don't want to act like there's no room for improvement on DTube because I agree that the things you brought up need to be addressed at some point, but I still think it offers a lot right now. I guess we'll just have to see how it develops this year!

Thanks for watching 😀

If you had seen youtube between years 1 and year 3 it was god damn awlful Dtube just needs a bit of time to get going.
I have been a on YouTube for over 10 years and made less than I have made on Dtube in a matter of weeks because people simply use ad blockers on YouTube now days and you are forced to seek out Sponsorships to make ends meat.
Dtube simply doesn't need ad's so you don't need sponsorship all you need is someone to like what you say and boom upvote=cash.

I have a video that has over 6 months worth of view time and has earned a whopping 4 cents due to how YouTube works.

If my top video on YouTube 6892 likes = 4c got the same on Dtube I would have made well over $1000 so yes YouTube right now may have the edge over Dtube but that will slowly change as more and more people are leaving YouTube due to the new rules where you spend hours and hours making a great video to be buried by people like Logan Paul who simply spew toxic crap out daily and there 8-12 year old viewers lap it up.

I am moving full time to Dtube and 50/50 on Twitch and Dlive.

Changes I would like to see is maybe 28 days where your videos can earn upvotes rather than the 7 days we have now but saying that things like Twitch rarely ever get watched as a VOD.

Just give Dtube and Dlive time and they will start to make real waves they may even start to make Google/YouTube rethink the stupied rules they keep rolling out and role back some of the changes.

Last thing for anyone with a large YouTube following thats thinking of moving to Dtube remember this You can always upload to both it's not hard it doesn't take hours to do in fact you can upload both at the same time as long as you have a half decent upload speed and if you don't then you mostlikely aren't uploading enough in the first place to make a difference one way or the other.

I can que 100+ videos to upload to YouTube at once (not that I have but I did que 30 at one point) and while they are uploding you could go ahead and upload them to Dtube (again not that you would want to 100 at a time)
Up load one video max a day to Dtube as people only have so much voting power (I would suggest maybe 1-4 a week max unless you have a large following.)

Greate video BTW gained a follower and an upvote.

In just my first month on DTube I´ve made 9090% larger income than I did on YouTube in almost 2 years. Let that sink in :D

Wow that's awesome, congrats! It's great that we have DTube as an alternative 😀

For me, the most important factor is who is the owner and what power he has.
YT could easily close an account or a channel or without explanations, not to pay a due amount under something like "not valid traffic" or similar.
This won't happen here.

Yeah that's definitely a great part about DTube!

Thanks for watching 😀

The most important things that favors Dtubers is that they are rewarded by the cryptocurrency and the youtubers by the fiat . Steem may go high since the platform is getting acquainted to many and many people . Anyway in some ways youtube have some pro's than of Dtube . Let's see what happens .Thanks for your insights @jeffbernst .

Actually I would argue that the pay out situation on YouTube is a little better because you can use fiat to buy cryptocurrency if that's what you'd rather have. But on Steem half of the rewards are tied up in SP and it takes 13 weeks to withdraw it. Not a problem for most of us because we want to invest in Steem anyway, but definitely something to consider :)

Thanks for watching! 🙂

I Really like your video and this explains much i wanted to know. For us as a Band d.tube is a big opportunity to show our Music and stuff to other People than we already have on YouTube. The Voting and Reward System is a little hard to understand, but making Money with our Music wasnt the plan in the First time, we just want to show everybody our Musik and want to entertain People with it. For this reason we are not partnered with YouTube and dont want to partner with them, because we dont want to bother People with annoying Ads.

Thanks for your Video!

Yeah it can all be kind of confusing in the beginning. But that's great to hear you're creating videos of your band! Good luck! 😀

Nice comparison video man. Dtube is gonna steem roll youtube(pun intended.)
