The crisis in Venezuela.
The worsening economic situation in Venezuela can cause a severe shortage of consumer goods, including food and medicine. Therefore, food security needs to be monitored.
FAO studied 48 countries, of which 22 face serious food crises this year, and warns that extreme vigilance and action must be taken to prevent further famines.
The report also states that more funds are needed to study countries where there is not enough recent data or there are discrepancies between organizations on the level of food insecurity, such as the cases of Venezuela, North Korea, Eritrea and Pakistan.
This approach of the agency contrasts with its previous position: it has awarded Venezuela two awards for the "reduction of poverty and hunger."
Venezuela is facing a serious crisis, which is far from easing. The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean said yesterday that the country's economy will fall 7.2%, which coincides with the forecast published last week by the International Monetary Fund, which calculated a contraction of 7.1% gross domestic product .
"The serious humanitarian crisis that is underway is complicated by the worsening of poverty, the collapse of the health system, growing security concerns and a growing exodus of people to neighboring countries," the IMF said.
