My DIYs - which products I make at home & why
Some products are better to buy, some are much more awesome if made at home. In this video I explain my philosophy how I decide which is the best in each situation.
What are you favorite DIYs?
Things I show in the video:
- dishwashing powder (see a whole video about that
air refreshener for bathroom
moisturizing cream
face tonic
facial wash
hair conditioner
deodorant :
Although I don't make any such products myself, I really enjoyed watching your video since I do like the fact people try different things to what the big corporates are pushing into our market and eventually into our own homes.
I've been living more and more consciously over time and try to buy the products that are environmentally friendly. Fun fact is that most of the time it turns out these are products my grandparents and their grandparents where using, basically the 'simple' products, rather than all the fancy stuff sold nowadays. For instance, to keep the sweat odours under control, I use a salt stick I apply simply by wetting the stick and apply it to the body parts that generate the most sweat during the day. Very effective! Th salt kills the smell of the bacteria growing wild on the sweat.
You may have a solution to create such stick at home :) When so, I'll be looking forward to read about it.
If you allow me, I like to understand how you determine when a product you create is more effective than what you can buy on the market? I suppose this needs a lot of testing, and quite a lot of time? Are friends and family helping you out in testing?
Do you actually provide (some of) your product to your friends and family? It'll b a good way to make others aware and get them thinking about how to make the world a better place for all of us, whilst questioning the mass products from a small set of powerful companies.
Super interesting video you made!
Hello! thank you for your comment!
I actually do have a video about home-made deodorant here, that has been working for me for more than 8 years! It's so simple, I can even explain it just here - mix baking soda and corn starch 1:1, than add coconut oil, keep adding and mixing until you get a smooth ointment texture, a few drops of favorite essential oils are good) That's it. My husband (@clixmoney) also uses it, it really keeps us from having any odours, even in hot summer, it's effect lasts 24 hours, or even more)
As for product testing, no testing, just I find some recipe, try it, and see whether I like it)) But my friends and family are not so excited about diy eco-friendly stuff, so I don't have effect on them... They believe in commercial products only. Except for my husband)
The things I make for myself are: deodorant, dish-washing powder, desinfecting gel, toilet refreshener, skin care products, mouth wash. The only thing I buy for the house is laundry powder. I used to make my own out of soda and grated soap, but my washing machine broke down. It was old, but everybody is sure it's because of my powder, so husband doesn't allow this any more with the new machine. Now I order laundry powder from iHerb, because in our country all household products have to be tested on animals by law :'((((((((
The recipe for deodorant is indeed very simple; I'll try this one for sure; I think I have all the ingredients at home already, so I must try it :) Am looking forward to the moment I can test it and determine if I like your recipe better than the salt stick I use. Thanks for this!
The washing machine thing: My mother learned me to add vinegar (the cheap home use version); It keeps the machine clean from calcium and give a more fresh result to the colours. Guess the soda you used is good for the cleaning part. Long time ago, people didn't even have soap, and I cannot believe they would be walking around with dirty stuff :)
A year ago I stopped using shampoo to clean my hair. After several weeks of lot of dirt and fat in my hair, it got a clean look and feel and is like that all the time since that moment; The only thing I do: Regularly I 'wash' my hair with water only. It doesn't smell at all, so it must be clean.

Great recipes. I've been looking for some replacements for commercial products, and I guess I'll be investing in some essential oils soon.
I have a question for you. I've been using baking soda as toothpaste for a long time now, because I can no longer get flouride free products where I live. However, I'd really like it to taste better. It seems like adding an oil to the soda would cause it to cake, so I never bothered. Do you have any ideas on how to make Baking soda taste less yucky?
Thanks!
