Homemade Elderberry Syrup!!!

in #dtube6 years ago

Hey Y'all!

We took the elderberries we picked and made elderberry syrup. This is a natural herbal medicine to prevent and use during cold and flu. They are full of all kinds of vitamins A, B, C, antioxidants, dietary fiber, and so many other good properties. This plant has been used since ancient times. Just be careful because the berries and stems can be toxic for those who don't know what they are doing.

We used 5 cups elderberries/5 cups water
Boiled and then simmered for 25-30 minutes.
We put them through a sieve and then a fine strainer to get out any remaining berries.
I put them back on the stove to add in some local honey and cinnamon and cloves.

I hope you enjoy this recipe and try to find some elderberries to make your own cold and flu syrup!
Have a great day!!!

I've heard of elderberry syrup and its health benefits before but never tried it. They grow all over the place where I live in the UK and I just googled it and now is the time to harvest them, so I'm going to try making some to boost my immune system for winter.

Awesome! I hope you find some! It’s harvesting time here as well:)

Some friends of mine swear by the health benefits! They gave me some, so I guess the next time I am not feeling well I will have to try and see if it works!

You can take it now to boost your immune system!

Sounds like a good idea! Thanks for the advice!

We've made some before and need to make some again this year. I still have a good deal of dried berries from last year's harvest. I may have cried when I came home one day and the landlord had cut down the elderberry outside our flat. Okay, I absolutely did cry.

I bet! I would have cried too! You can use your dried ones if you don’t find fresh ones!

I've made it with dried berries before. I can never get around to picking and making it in a timely manner so I dry them as default ;)

This is such a great idea!

yeah yeah yeah...syrup smerup...what about Elderberry Wine? Now that would be worth making a video of. then you could have your local fellow steemians come and try it out! lol.

That would be so fun!

yes it would be and it would taste so good! and if the stuff really hits the fan like most of the people on here think it will, that would be one of the most sought after items to have on hand to barter, trade or drink! lol.

just tell Farmer you want him to build you a still! lol.

I didn’t know elderberries were toxic except the juice. Good to know! Were those berries wild? We tried planting a bush this spring, but our dog decided he wasn’t going to let it grow :(

They grow by the creek wild. Bad dog! Lol
Yes you don’t necessarily want to eat raw berries or stems. Can be toxic.

They are tiny! I don't think I've ever seen them in person. Only after they have been squished into juice, haha.

Lol have you tried it? It’s not bad in comparison to the shelf stuff.

Yeah I thought it was a bit tart just after pressing.

Now that might be a cold and flu medication I wouldn't mind taking. :D Your lovely assistant put all her weight into squeezing that honey bottle, or at least made it look like she did, LOL, she did a great job. :D
I love that your two youngest gave it the thumbs up but your eldest gave it the thumbs down, I guess that means you can say 2 out of 3 children love this remedy. :D
God bless you and your wonderful family. :D Have an awesome day my fabulous friend! :D

She loves to help! Lol My oldest will get used to it! I’d send ya some to try if I could!:)

I'd try it if you could send it, but I doubt you'd be able to get it through customs. :D I appreciate the thought though, thank you very much. :D
