Swimming Deer?!? [Video]
So...here's something else I captured in Alaska on a boat outing one day, captained by the amazing Chris who I will introduce you to in a forthcoming post about deep sea fishing.
We were already on our way back to town and overall had not seen any activity from whales or other sea animals. Suddenly in the distance I noticed what I didn't recognize as any typical water dwelling creatures and as it came more into focus I could tell these were the heads / ears or deer. I probably screamed (gleefully) and asked the others to confirm what I was seeing.
It was really extraordinary; I'd never seen deer swim. As adorable and downright cute it was, I was concerned if they were in danger being in the water and Chris told me that they might not be okay if they can't get to land quickly. We could only assume they were trying to get to the island in sight in the background but we really had no idea where they came from or if they were struggling to stay on course.
We speculated that they possibly were getting away from bears on the beach where they lived since it would have to be a significant threat for them to be driven away from their home. Chris decided to cut the engines and see how close we could get to them and try to help guide them towards the land, which we did. Yet another truly incredible experience....hope you enjoy this compilation from video I shot and still photos.
