Music is known to soothe the most savage beast in the heart of madness. Even some songs have been able to transport the mind to place the body cannot travel, either physically or, metaphysically, as quick as a thought can move. What’s more wonderful is that even as little as a melody can be enough momentum to uplift a mood or change one’s mindset in the face of dire factors. There’s no doubt the power of music has over our lives. As one musician once told me, “the first language is sound” as our first song is our mother’s heartbeat whilst inside the womb.

Like childbirth, music culture has echoed throughout the lands of Africa’s savannah as bass and tremble quaked across hundreds of miles to communicate urgent warnings, diplomatic messages, and calls of trade. This polyphonia that originate in the wilds of primordial humankind deepen out child-like wonder as much as we subconsciously ungulate or bodies to the rhythm in its signature. Every corner of the world, music comes from the words we speak and the intentions that precede those ideas, into feelings without saying, expressions sighed in every note and gush with each syllable.

“Gloomy Sunday” (Original Version)

Songs that are softly played, delicate, ornate, shimmering twinkling of whole notes played upon a stringed instrument register in certain cultures as dissonant, haunting, and some cases, downright creepy. How do we really perceive this audial phenomenon called music differently, yet intuitively connected to a particularly human universality we cannot easily deny. The notion that in order to understand music is to appreciate its definitive nature by style or genre couldn’t detach us further from the real, honest experiences encoded in the poetics of music.

Music can be played and it can be sung, an expression and it’s feeling as one, intertwined by the pictures illustrated in the listener’s mind telegraphically relay a time and place, at a time in a space, the interaction simultaneously exists but for a moment forever. A song is a moment that can last forever, as a memory recourse, through its incremental progressions and flourishing culminations. Much alike to a memory, a song bursts into your consciousness at the present moment and fades as brilliantly as each time its played the memory intensifies, waning and waxing amber shades of gray.

Quantic - Time Is The Enemy

Lyrics convey meanings with certainty as often as it perverses the purpose of the words used to detail the meaning. Innuendos, double-entendres, jargon, even trends in slang distort and disfigure the singue of cultural inflections. In some cases, other expressions reach from the darkness of history and cast a light on once a horrific zeitgeist into a nursery rhyme to soothe the fuss of a stirring child. In other songs, the haunt of 10,000 years of toil remind us in their recital, the warming comfort of joy connect millions of people across millions of miles with hope as the most faithful are heard singing along, their voices above the choir in every enunciation of each and every word.
