Getting Wrapped at the Doighouse Build
View this post on Hive: Getting Wrapped at the Doighouse Build
Since the Steem blockchain became a centralized, top-down dominated place, where control and censorship thrive, I have decided to move my content. Don't worry, though, all my posts and up and doing well on the decentralized Hive blockchain. Come and check it out!
You may be right on the overkill for drainage. Just read through satisfying the Man too. Especially if your berm is mostly covered by the roof, you probably have a case of someone covering their bum...
Awesome that you like my posts! Yeah, but so what? After more than a dozen Earthship-like structures in BC (supposedly), a bit of overkill is to be expected from the first code-approved one.
last week the entire state of Kerala is under water.. the year before it was Chennai.. When it rains HARD, it doesnt matter how much storage we have, it will overflow.. and if you have a big roof you will need a LOT of VERY good drainage to deal with it.. if there is ever a time for overkill it is drainage as material cost is low, depending how you do it.. and as it does get a bit dirty or blocked int between cleaning it will still allow enough water to pass though..
If you are building with any wood near the ground that is just another reason for good drainage.. NOthin worse than rotting wood that needs replacing ;-)
I like alt building materials, I think I have an article filed from MEN about a hay bale house that really intrigued me. Then I actually saw a house in Flordia that all of the walls were from scrap 2x4's(18"-24" long) stacked like bricks, except they rounded some of the walls.
Where I live, the inspectors wouldn't know what to do with an earthship. They would probably just pass it and move on after talking about it for a couple hours and then their mandatory re-inspection for a small additional fee of course....
As stranger and stranger things are happening to our weather and climate regionally and globally it is worth preparing for the odd 'once in one hundred year' floods and fires... Even to be aware of where once in one thousand year events happened. We are a part of larger cycles and our ignorance is to our own detriment. Codes are a worthy starting point...
This seems like overkill on the building code. You could be right that it is the engineer and the architect covering their butts on a new type of building...
Its not overkill! The build i helped with in the uk had even more than double the insulation than this with additional spray foam filling even the tiniest gaps between pieces. U need this level of insulation if u want the best performance and minimal requirement to heat it! Code is not good enough because they dont mind you heating your home.. this is one reason why earthships can have a negative foodtprint! Performance is off the charts!
Oh, that foam-spray was well discussed here as well. In the end we opted against it, but made sure to fill the gaps with the cut-off pieces. It's the drainage I personally think is a bit much, particularly since the roof is going to harvest water, and it covers most of the insulated berm. But since doing something is worth doing well, an overkill is not a problem.
yeah that foam is also nasty stuff.. SO chemically... im sure it will be fine also. if u are in an extreme climate then it might be a good idea..
and yes man .. overkill is the best idea... you Never know what nature may throw at you.. Look at Kerala this past two weeks.. ! I like Armageddon proof ;-0
I'm sure there is a certain amount of that in it, and why not? This will be the first code approved Earthship in BC!
History in the making. Well worth doing it right. Then we can expand from there.
So much tedious work added from the codes people! As if it wasn't already a lot of work building an earthship.... they have their reasons, and you guys figured out how to put the puzzle together anyways, nice job!
This is starting to look awesome. Inspiring as always, thanks for the update!
