How To Observe the Eclipse (according to a 1900 article)
"Naked eye observation may be made through smoked glass, and everyone who wishes to witness the phenomenon should prepare the glass beforehand.
Two pieces of glass the same size about three or four inches square will be most convenient. One piece should be smoked until the sun seen through it does not dazzle the eye, then a narrow hollow mat of thin cardboard is glued to the smoked surface, while the other piece of glass is glued to the mat.
In this way the smoked surface is protected from injury in handling. Through such a glass most of the features of the eclipse may be seen in a very satisfactory manner.
During the actual totality, however, there is but little danger in looking at the eclipse directly with the unprotected eye."
