Inflation.
As I I have said elsewhere, I've noticed the most drastic inflation on the lowest cost to staple items. Root vegetables, such as carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, brown onions the lowest price meets, like ground beef, ground turkey, whole chickens, eggs. I think a lot of people have moved to lower price versions as inflation has hit higher prices and they just can't go any lower and that's where the food conglomerates are choosing to gouge them. It's less visible to people with good salaries and political power if the steak goes up 20% but ground beef goes up 100%.
There is some investigation into price fixing among these major food distributors, but Lena khans term as head of the FTC is set to expire this month. So far there's been no sign that Kamala Harris will support her continuing in the position. I suspect that her appointment by the Biden administration was accidentally good and they didn't realize how many monopolies (political donors) she would go after.
