GIRL-CHILD EDUCATION : WHY THE DENIAL?!!!
This century has witnessed a great surge in the education of the girl-child more than its previous counterparts. The situation of education has generally improved significantly, but that of the girl-child is still being plagued by so many issues which has contributed to the apathy of the populace towards their education.
Although at first glance, it might seem all is well with the female education in Nigeria, but it is certainly not so.
BUT WHY IS IT SO?
why is the girl-child being denied quality education which is supposed to enhance her general well-being and make her contribute her quota to growth and national development ? Why are they continuously discriminated against as a result of their gender? Why are they not seen as the block builders of nations and that in educating a girl-child, you educate a nation? What then happens if the reverse is the case, that then means that when a girl-child is uneducated, a whole nation would continue to wallow in ignorance. If we understand this underlying principle, why is the literacy rate of female children IN this country still at its lowest?
Well, I will attempt to proffer some possible reasons which might be responsible for the state of things And perhaps also propose the way out of this quagmire.
I think that religious and traditional beliefs are majorly responsible for girls' literacy rates. So many believe that the girl is destined to end up in the kitchen and so sending her to school would be tantamount to a waste of hard-earned resources. Others believe she is meant to be mated to birth as many children as possible, a baby making machine. Is that to be her whole purpose in life? Is that where her whole existence should revolve around? Is that the reason she is married off as a little girl and forced to live a life she has little or no control over? Is that why she is meant to go through abuses such as rape and molestation, because she is seen as a door-mat for use, misuse and abuse ?
You can see that the current situation of girl-child education in Nigeria is far from being satisfactory. The Northern region is even worse off with their religion and tradition supporting child marriages and female illiteracy.
However, hope is rekindled if we can start these processes , by implementing the measures proffered stringently .
- Diffusing the populace of the notion that a girl's place is the 'bed and kitchen' . This can be done by way of media enlightenment.
- Promulgating laws that will prohibit the girl-child's absence from school.
- Providing adequate healthcare for girls, educating them on sex related information so they are able to avoid unwanted pregnancies.
- Making provisions for female drop-outs to get useful by creating skill acquisition centres.
There are many things that can be done to curb the situation thereby making them relevant in our society and preventing acts that tend to relegate them to less than nothing.

Educating the girl child will be a plus to any society.
Thanks for sharing
Many fail to understand the importance of a woman being educated. Many see it as a form of wasting resources because she will get married
But can i ask you a question
Are you giving out your daughter or sister as a liability or as an asset to the man she is getting married to?
I so much believe in the education of the girl child because i dont know whom i might marry in the nearest future
In this age and time, no one should even dare to stop the young girls from attending school and getting the education they deserve. The world can only become better if gender inequality is stopped. This ladies also have things to contribute to this world
Girl are ill treated education wise especially in the northern part of the country that has no value for females which is very bad. The case is even different here in the east.
Girl-child also have potentials. Let's train them. Thanks for this post
I'm so sorry to hear that the education for girls is so hard there. I hope that it gets better in the future. God has created woman differently, but as equally important to their counter parts. I wish you the best!
