Words on Climate Change
I had the pleasure of speaking with a grad student pursuing her Ph.D in Marine Biology at UC San Diego. Her dissertation being an investigation of which bivalve molluscs (Clams, Mussels, etc.) would be at greatest risk given varying degrees of climate change. She also expressed that although she was passionate about her research, she also found it alarming at just how severe forecast of models of weather will be affecting human life as we currently known it for the past 5000 years.
Perhaps the most disquieting aspect of the conversation dealt with the fact that many her family members are climate change deniers who felt that she “was wasting her time and money studying something that was completely pointless.” Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio she referred to this line of thinking as “rust belt” mentality. I must say that I am at a loss for words when it comes to a portion of the population that chooses political ideologies and perspectives over scientific data. For this my only suggestion for solvency would be improved education on the topic.
But this is difficult to do when the ‘news’ isn’t being reported completely: https://thinkprogress.org/abc-and-nbcs-nightly-news-programs-are-failing-their-viewers-967f7c7adb06/
Let’s hear it Steemians, how do you weigh in to the topic of Climate Change?
Post Script
For those who don’t have time to read a dissertation, here is an article: https://www.pri.org/stories/2017-04-25/understand-climate-change-look-it-mussels-perspective
Climate change is a significant threat for human health, is reponsible for temperature related death and Illness, for air quality impacts, extreme events like hurricanes, water related illness e.t.c and is more than necessary to have people educated about it as you already suggest in your post. Thanks for posting about it!
Thank you! This comic gave me a jaw dropping "EXACTLY!" moment.
I wanted to say more but that said it all.
