A quick checklist for le bon ton online
The online universe is about communication: people meet each other online, argue and discuss. But just because you are apparently interfacing with a gadget doesn't mean that manners should be forgotten. (*)
Here's a quick list of general rules for keeping your bon ton online:
1. never say anything online that you wouldn't be able to articulate directly to your vis-a-vis;
2. play it safe and treat others with respect;
3. do not use your screen as a shield: always write polite messages and e-mails, avoid sentiments that you would never normally express in your everyday life;
4. don't be a bully: people online can't fight back, mind your manners;
5. always think about your potential audience: their background, age, gender, political views and try to avoid inappropriate comments and vocabulary;
6. remember, it's not a competition: the number of followers you get doesn't really matter. Think carefully before you accept someone to your friend list;
7. be conscious when you post photos of others: ask for permission, consider your friends' feelings;
8. remember that the online world can't substitute your real life, so don't annoy the people around you with a like&dislike strategy you usually apply online;
9. there are times when phone calls and letters are more important: don't let social networking take over all other methods of your communication;
10. and finally don't lose yourself: the online universe could easily mislead you into a fantasy world, where you are more attractive and successful than in your real life. Don't fall into this trap.
