The mystery of how the Egyptian pyramids could be built could finally have an answer

in #egypt7 years ago

Egypt is one of the most incredible places in the world. It seems incredible that the pyramids were built so long ago with such perfection and today we have the possibility to see them, as a testimony of a past that continues to be, in many aspects, a mystery.

The Great Pyramid of Giza is the oldest of the 7 wonders of the world. It is believed that it was built in 2570 BC. C .; It was the first and largest of the three pyramids of the Necropolis of Giza (in Cairo) and the tallest building in the world for almost 4 thousand years.

When you see it, the question arises almost automatically: how is it that the Egyptians managed to move the stone to build it if the advances in transport that we know today did not yet exist?

The archaeologist Mark Lehner and his team found an ancient papyrus that would indicate that the limestone blocks of more than 2 tons were transported through the Nile in wooden boats built especially for this, and united by ropes that, through a system of channels, they reached an internal port, very close to the base of the pyramid.

More details about the process

The limestone that the Egyptians used to build this 139-meter-tall structure came from Tura, a town that is located more than 800 kilometers from where the pyramid is. In the internal chambers of the construction was also used granite from Aswan, another city near Tura.

According to this discovery, the transfer of so much weight over such long distances could have been possible thanks to the work of thousands of workers (slaves) in boats.

This could be known since the discovered papyrus was written by a foreman of around 40 specialized workers. It is the only document that has been found by someone who has directly worked in that construction. In it not only the transport is described; It also details the construction of a system of dams and channels to facilitate the final stretch of the route to reach the pyramid.

Thanks to this discovery, the American archaeologist found a part of those ancient canals, and now we get a little closer to know some of the secrets that this imposing beauty built by man still continues to treasure in silence.
