Unlike Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras or Belize; in El Salvador we do not have monumental pre-Columbian ruins like those of Tikal, Chichen Itza or Copán. However in El Salvador there is a unique and very special archaeological site, because thanks to it we can get an idea of what the daily life of the Mesoamerican people was like almost 1500 years ago.
It is assumed that about 600 AD, the sudden and catastrophic eruption of the Loma Caldera volcano forced the inhabitants of this settlement to flee precipitately from the place, leaving their houses and belongings in such a state that it would seem as if suddenly people simply disappeared in a few seconds.
Successive layers of volcanic ash covered the area, keeping it hidden, until it was accidentally discovered in 1976.
It has been determined that the settlement was composed of about 20 structures, of which to date have been dug 10. In them have been found steam baths, bedrooms, kitchen area including utensils with leftover food, clay dishes ; grain warehouses, farmland, gardens and wooden fences. They even found some rodents and a duck.
There are also community structures that are supposed to be used for religious or political acts and a house that is different from the others and supposed to be for community leaders.

Unfortunately, as with many other things in El Salvador, Joya de Cerén is practically ignored by the Salvadorans, being more appreciated in its true value by the foreigners who visit us. I myself had not appreciated it until a friend who visited me from Russia, spoke to me about the place and made me see my mistake in not giving it the importance that deserves such a fantastic place. In part this post intends to amend me even a little and make it known both my compatriots and friends around the world. Thanks for your attention!
