SLC21/WK4: Introduction To House Wiring And Load Handling.

The next time my neighbours call for help in reconnecting or rewiring their burnt switches, or blown switch gears, I will be there to fix them and get appreciated a bit for my work, as a student a Pepsi drink is okay, I am happy that this week has one of the most thrilling topics, I have also looked forwards for a more practical lesson like this, now I found one, almost forgot the last wiring in my place of residence as a student was done by someone else and I won't let it happen again, my socket is now bad I will be fixing them by myself this time, Thanks to @solaymann

Q1

What do you mean by house wiring?

House wiring is an electrical system where control devices like resistors, circuit breakers including fuses are connected in a way that supplies power to all appliances at home, in house wiring every appliance can have separate control devices like switches and the connection is done in such a way that it doesn't affect other connections(that is switching ON a bulb in a room will not ON a bulb in another room unless they are connected to each other) that why we have different type of wiring and different materials for house wiring.

IMG_20241122_112436_032.jpg

House wiring could also be the installation of cables and wires from the main distributer of electricity to outlets, switches and appliances through out the house using any preferable and suitable wiring technique.

Mention the name and function of the materials mentioned in the picture. Mention their requirements in house wiring.

What I can see in parts are a switchboard [switch, fuse, socket], Neon Tester/screwdriver, bulb or lamp holder cap, the plug.

IMG_20241120_071209_270.jpgIMG_20241120_070642_957.jpg

SWITCH BOARD; The view shows the switch board comprises of the switch, the fuse and the socket, so apart from saying the switch board houses this three component, we can explain them individually.

  • The fuse is capable of altering the flow of current from entering the board when it is pull out, in cases of electric power fluctuation we can pull out to avoid unstable current from destroying the appliances plugs on the sockets.

  • Sockets is where appliances are plugged in, we choose our sockets depending on the plug of our appliances.

  • The switch is an important component of the switch board because it stop the flow of current from passing from the circuit to the appliance, it has the same function as the fuse but the difference is that the fuses stop the current flow totally from flowing in the circuits.

IMG_20241122_111809_792.jpgIMG_20241122_111654_833.jpg

TESTER; The tester is used to test the flow of current in a circuit, there is always a bulb in it that lights indicating that current is in the circuit. It can also serve as a screwdriver to lossen and tighten screws.

IMG_20241120_065923_888.jpgIMG_20241120_065820_340.jpg

LAMP HOLDER CAP; it is used to cover the lampholder head to ensure no naked capable is see around, it adds beauty to the lampholder when covered, the lampholder itself is connected to light bulbs that gives lighting to the house.

IMG_20241122_111928_340.jpg

THE PLUG; It is found in all electrical appliances that is made to be connected to sockets for its functioning, so the plug is where electricity is passed to the body of the appliances.

Q2

What kind of wiring has been done in your home?

IMG_20241122_112402_155.jpgChannel Wiring

All the wiring listed in the contest post has been used in wring my house apart from wiring immersed in plasters, it has a great disadvantage except the modernised on where a pipe is passed through the wall. I will be explaining one type of wiring mostly used in the student lounge and that is channel wiring, this wiring is done by attaching a plastic in the wall and passing a cable through it, I discovered that wiring in my lounge is categorically group into this, even though the plastics are not large but it is like a clip, but since it uses a plastic I call it channel wiring.

IMG_20241122_112936_939.jpg

Advantages of channel wiring

  • Fault are easily detected and Cables can be changed easily
  • It doesn't restrict the kind of appliances to be connect and each point on a house wires can be tested to be sure of current flow.
  • There is reduced risk of fire outbreaks
  • It protects electrical wire covering, cables can not be easily cut and crushed.
*It makes connections neat and professional.

Write the advantages of earthing or grounding. At least three.

I was taught about insulator and lightning arrestors and this is made to hinder electricity with high voltage from getting into house wiring to destroy appliances.

  • By adding earthing in our homes the rate of risk of electrical fire is reduced providing a safe path current flow.

  • It protect against electrical shock enhancing safety.

  • The power quality is improved, making appliances to be more efficient.

  • This is very important for appliances because the possibility of this devices getting spoilt because of lightning is reduced

Q3

Connect the switchboard as per the given diagram and show a load handling (Lamp/Fan). Consistent clear details should be mentioned

Using the diagram above I was able to connect a mini switch board, including my load but the time, I used the same load but this time I made it two so instead of a bulb and a fan, I used two bulbs.

IMG_20241122_101919_783.jpgIMG_20241122_101821_600.jpg
IMG_20241122_101814_287.jpgIMG_20241122_101735_573.jpg

First I made my connection with the bulbs, the negative part were on a white wire and the positive side was on the other green wire, then the positive side of the wire was now made long with another wire, then the other part was also made but since I didn't have an MCB or an Electric meter, I decided to attach as switch since it is part of the lesson,

IMG_20241122_110850_768.jpg

so what happen is that the switch is to be passed through the same wire, the other part of the wire which you can either choose the negative or positive wire,

I choosed the negative wire and then connected the wire coming from the circuit to one part of the switch then link the same colour of wire on the other part, the two wire becomes the plug and can be connected to a battery to give us bring out the light.

IMG_20241122_111520_108.jpg

I connected the battery to the circuit and it gave me a good lighting and operated my switch and saw it was working properly.

Q4

Mention the precautions you take while doing electrical wiring. Why is it important to be careful in electrical work? (Write in your own language)

IMG_20241122_111200_334.jpg

  • In electrical wiring it can be so confusing when you don't take note of the wires like strictly connecting positive ends on red wire and negative on black, this is done so that wires is not mistakenly interchanged causing electric sparks and breaches in current flow.

  • To avoid electric shock the main supply of electricity must be detached, the fuse box must be removed.

  • Personal protective wears should not be left out especially when fixing wires that requires a connection to the source for detecting fault properly

  • A wiring diagram is necessary, just as a building has a plan, a wiring plan is also made to understand circuit layout and connection pathways.

  • Using your teeth to peel a wire insulation is wrong, in previous classes we were taught about tools, so a plier is the right tool to twist and cut wires while a knife is useful in scrapping wire insulation. In summary use the right tool for electrical works.

Why you should be careful?

Being careful has a bag full of benefits

  • It prevent electric shock
Preserve life and property from getting damaged

  • Reduces risk of spark leading to fire outbreaks.

  • Makes reconnection by another electrician possible.

I want to invite @bossj23 @ubongudofot and @whizzbro4eva to join in this contest

Hi @nsijoro, thank you for participating in the Basic Electricity Homework. We have assessed your Homework post , and the below captures our assessments.

A. Your idea about house waring is correct. Failure to follow house wiring rules and load calculations leads to more electrical accidents. Proper house wiring is very important to avoid electrical shock. Hope you learned from our lesson. Very Good (2 Marks)

B. You have given the picture of the house waring of your house. A disadvantage of channel house waring is that it does not look good. Thanks for the nice presentation. Very Good (2 Marks)

C. You have created an electronic circuit. But in our homework we are asked to connect a light or a fan through an electrical circuit. Hope you understand your mistake. (1 Marks)

D. You mention some precautions to take while doing electrical homework. There are some other important electrical precautions you should have mentioned. Thanks for trying. Very Good (1 Marks).
