A lesser talked about renewable energy type

in #energy7 years ago

Two thirds of our planet is water and its constantly moving as waves and tides.

This water in motion represents huge amounts of energy that can be harvested and turned into electricity.

Wave and tidal power is more predictable than wind power. Wave power also increases during the winter when electricity demand also increases.

Wave and tidal power generation is well developed due to the huge potential in Britain.

Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon will be the world’s first tidal lagoon power plant.

A tidal lagoon is a ‘U’ shaped breakwater, built out from the coast which has a bank of hydro turbines in it. Water fills up and empties the man-made lagoon as the tides rise and fall. We generate electricity on both the incoming and outgoing tides, four times a day, every day.

You can find much more detailed information on this project at http://www.tidallagoonpower.com/projects/swansea-bay/

For artists impressions and computer generated simulations of how the final product will look and function, take a look at the video below.

My Master degree is on renewable energy too (but focus on biogas industry). This topic is quite interesting if you go further into details. Germany has experience with overload energy from renewable sources. If tidal energy comes into the equation, we can get cheaper electricity!

I have always felt like the world needs to look more into renewable energy. We have unlimited power from the sun and from oceans and rivers, why not use it?

Awesome to see this technology being applied and the video was a great demonstration on how it works. Now hopefully other places will follow the trend!

Without a Doubt Tidal energy is lesser talked energy resource.
Something we should be harness more.
Also we should find out some way to capture and harness the lightning bolts energy. I know it's gonna be hard to capture , but hopefully someone like Elon Musk might come up with something:)

We should use that kind of energy much more than we are using now. You just got yourself a new steady follower.

You are right and yes wind turbines can't be installed everywhere because they need proper air flow rate. You should use run of river turbine if you have constant low head water flow. Moving to renewable energy resources is the only way we can fulfill the energy demands of current world.

Most energy generating aggregates that are using natural resources such as water or wind are changing the nature. If by some point we will have significantly more power plants on earth that we have now, it can cause fatal results for the earth in the long run.

Awesome info on alternate sources of renewable energy. At this point, striving to implement all types of efficient energy generation in an attempt to relieve stress from Earth’s ecosystem, is a good thing on my books. Thanks for sharing again @sme !

great points, water is life, clean water and clean energy from water can be part of the same solution/ peace !

Amazing! Just think about the impact this could have combined the the technology of blockchain! Check out WePower if you are curious!
