The eosDAC YouTube Channel Was Taken Down and We Need Your Help!

in #eosdac7 years ago (edited)

Here's yet another reason why decentralization is so important! As I blogged about recently, I've joined the eosDAC launch team. The eosDAC snapshot for our upcoming airdrop takes place within hours from the date of this post (1am UTC, April 15th). See this countdown clock if timezones are confusing to you.

I woke up this morning to find our YouTube channel is completely gone!

Not only that, a scammer is trying to phish EOS token holders. Don't ever give anyone your private keys!

Yesterday our eosDAC YouYube channel was targeted in a coordinated attack starting with downvote bots. We saw hundreds of downvotes in a very short period if time. Then the phishers created a fake website, YouTube channel, and fake video. They exploited the YouTube algorithms to get the eosDAC channel deleted. eosDAC is actively fighting back and posted about it on our website here.

The phisher’s site is http://eos-dac.com and is impersonating the real eosDAC website ( https://eosdac.io ), and we are seeking to remove it. Can you help us report these scammers to Google and YouTube?

Here's how you can help:

  1. Report http://eos-dac.com to Google's safebrowsing team as a phishing site: https://safebrowsing.google.com/safebrowsing/report_phish/

  2. Flag and report the phishing YouTube channel "eosDAC Official": https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWA1ikg1pUikhbd9UjdMthw/about

    1. Click the flag and select Report user

    2. Select impersonation.

    3. You'll then be redirected to another page where you need to select the This channel is impersonating a YouTube channel I follow or am familiar with and paste in our real channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkotfRlstQBYnReFv987ULg

    4. Scroll down past your own video content and report their video:

    5. Finally add some notes as you see fit, check the reCAPTCHA, and hit Submit.

    6. If you want, you can also report the individual video.

  3. Spread the word so people understand eosDAC will never ask for your private keys. Help educate people to protect themselves from phishing attacks.

All in all, it's quite an impressive attack. They are using the centralized algorithms of YouTube against us which is ridiculous considering their channel was just created yesterday.

Please help the eosDAC community by reporting this fraud. It's frustrating to see my face on a website that is scamming people.

The real eosDAC website is https://eosdac.io/

http://eos-dac.com is a fraud.

Stay tuned for updates as the snapshot is almost here. Remember, to get your free eosDAC tokens, simply hold your EOS in a wallet you control. If you're not sure if the wallet you use supports ERC20 tokens, then ask them. If you can export the private key (like with Exodus), then you can use MEW (MyEthereumWallet) to access your tokens. If you want to trust your exchange to handle this for you, make sure they are listed here (but really, why trust an exchange with your cryptocurrency?). This airdrop is automatic and there's nothing you need to do, though keep in mind it may take several weeks for the eosDAC tokens to show up in your wallet. The snapshot it uses will include the EOS in your wallet as of April 15th 01:00 UTC, regardless of if your ETH addresses is registered with an EOS address. If you have less than 100 EOS and still want your eosDAC, you'll be able to use this page to request your tokens manually: https://eosdac.io/airdrop/

Thank you for your support and your help in demonstrating to these scammers that the cryptocurrency community will not stand for this. Fraud will be met with action.

This is a PERFECT example of just how vulnerable centralized systems like YouTube are to exploit hacking. Transparency, and immutability of block-chain is the most powerful tool we have for fighting scammers like this.

Exactly. Transparency, reputation, and identity in a global, immutable, non-violent consensus system is the key to preventing this stuff.

dear @lukestokes i all time like love and support your post. but i very miss you dear.

I'm a user of the cryptonite extension from metacert. This extension protects user agains such attacks. In this phase, project owners are asked to get in contact with the CEO and in order to let their sites be listed and protected.

You can contact Paul Walsh (CEO) on Telegram (https://t.me/metacert).

The extension does not work by simple lists, it can detect new phishing sites.

I asked the CEO to add steemit.com to metacert and he did. It worked on phishing sites without adding them to a list and protected me. So this extension is really great!

As eosdac is not added to cryptonite, you should ask in the telegram channel to let them add eosdac.io.

I'm just a user and not affiliated with metacert.

Thank you for that information, but at this time there is nothing on eosdac.io requires any blockchain interaction. I'm confused about how this works. Does it just whitelist the "real" eosDAC and show others as fakes?

Yes, this is how it works.

I reported the phishing site to metacert. I will report if the extension will work.

Cryptonite blocks the phising site now:

eosdac.io is added to the list of verified crypto sites.

Seems when reporting phishing sites, it is done by verifying the original site.

I've been chatting with their team in Telegram. Thanks for the heads up!

Reported to Google with your form!

Thanks for the update @lukestokes hats off for your efforts. 👍🏻👍🏻

I am going to take a action right now.

  1. Report to Google - CHECK
  2. Report youtube channel - CHECK
  3. ALREADY CHECKED :-)

These things happen but the timing of this is not good. I have been following you and your work and I found the team you are a part if is also solid as hell.
You guys don't really need assurance from a newbie but I am sure this won't be able to put a dent the work that your team has already done.

Great post!

This is very similar to the problem BTC is facing today. How do you allow for complete privacy; a decentralized service/good/currency to continue to grow without regulation?

This is why DAPPS are essentially the wild west of tech.

It makes everything difficult for legislators. Much like the discovery of nuclear fission by a German nuclear physicist in 1933; who discovered that upon splitting an atom the reaction was a massive surge of energy equal to over 30,000,000 volts of electricity. Naturally, he was very excited.

He believed his discovery would revolutionize mankind by providing an alternative source of nuclear energy thus eliminating civilization's dependence on natural gas; which would reduce carbon emissions and make the world a safer/cleaner/less hostile place. This of course was during the rise of fascism.

All the politicians of the time (first Nazi Germany, than Churchill than FDR with the Manhattan Project) heard was massive surge of electricity and their immediate question was "can this be used to make a bomb" at which point that physicist's heart must've sank into his stomach.

"Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds" - Robert Oppenheimer after the trinity testing.

This is why I cannot emphasize the importance of having an active community regulate EoS/Dtube/DAPPS in general.

Without the community playing their part; we can clearly see how something with so many positive benefits: transparency, openness, lack of regulation can be turned into something dangerous.

The future of blockchain and EoS is contingent on the community's ability to maintain it.

Hi @lukestokes ! This is a great example of how all of us need to act upon scam acts like this one. And sure indeed here is a clear example of how a centralized system like youtube is so vulnerable to attacks and how it can take a long time to solve issues created by scammers.

Hopefully this is solved as soon as possible.

By the way, I started a New Series - Daily Brief Lessons About the Steem Blockchain - From the creator of the 10 Chapters Full Steemit Guide

and also created a message for all Steem Ambassadors campaigning for witness votes for you and @jerrybanfield for your huge support to the @steem-ambassador project. Check here

Looking forward to your thoughts!

"Transparency, reputation, and identity in a global, immutable, non-violent consensus system is the key"...Well said !
I forget what state in starting to move their voting system to the blockchain. Things are moving to the right direction :)

Best wishes to yuo.

It seems that almost everyday there is another event that reminds us why privacy and security on the internet is not something to take lightly. Stories like this motivate me even more to learn and help build the decentralized internet we need. No single point of failure.

I've also reported them and hope everything gets dealt with.

Thanks for your sharing @lukestokes, i have read your post, very interesting sir.
