An Overview on the Subject

First off, a big question pops up, what is does the phrase “organization sustainability” denote? Can a company thrive in an environment without considering the effect of it activities on the host community? These are a few questions the company’s management has to proffer answers to if they wish to design a proper future for company. As it has been noticed overtime that an ill planned company’s future, may lead to failures that might cripple the company’s success over the process of time.

Criss-cross Analysis of Organization Ethics

It is eminent to note that almost every organization should be known for a brand of standards that makes it outstanding. These standards are the tools that propagate the organization’s footing on a frame of stability.

But with a close look at the present norm circumventing many organizations and their activities, it is observed that a lot of firms are largely concerned and driven by profit generation, in the process despising the frame of ethics.

This they tend to achieve as their sole aim, throwing caution to the wind when it come to depleting the business ecosystem, by being ethically irresponsible both internally and to the parent host community. This trend births a change in the organization's internal relational trend and also with the host community, birthing friction in the process.

Case study

With Nigeria as an oil producing giant in Africa, comes issues of ethics resulting from the negligence of this oil producing multinationals. With this negligence in ethics as related to this companies and the process surrounding the handling of the spillage, there has be birth a huge friction in the relationship between the host communities and this multinationals.

With Rivers state been the nerve center of oil exploration, came a huge environmental pollution birthed from the activities of this firms which overtime, has effected a large volume of the environment. The effect of this eventuality, cuts across a large volume of the verse land and the aquatic bodies of the Ogoni axis.

To birth a remedy to this situation, it is estimated that the spillage cleaning process will required a whooping sum, that will range to about One Billion Dollars or more. Going a bit further with the details, the cleaning exercise is expected to last for three to four decade. But there is more.

The impact of the spill have overtime affected the health and livelihood of everyone within and around the area. leading to cancers and respiratory diseases noticed among the populace. The most excruciating part is that, most companies directly involved have continued trending with their processes, chasing large profit volumes and ignoring the impact of their activities on the region and the people as well. This they did breaking every rule in book and pages of ethics as regards to their host communities.

But what would it cost this organization to be a bit more ethical? What would it take to be responsible enough to take up the responsibility? Wouldn’t it have been nicer for these firms to reduce the adverse effect of their activities many might dare to ask? Most likely it might require a bit financial engagement in the process (of cleaning the oil spillage) that might eat into their take home profit; this might have stood in their thought line and helped their minds to decide not to decide in the favor of been a bit more ethical.

Imagine a situation where all form of ethics is abused and the host community becomes depleted, what will become of these companies in this region, when the host is no more? Little wonder we have overtime experienced great frictional issues and hostilities between host communities in the Niger delta region and the multinational.

This over the trend of history has led to situations where the host communities, out of rage have gone forward to vandalize the property and installation of these companies.

The aftermath of this, have created situation has birthed an atmosphere which has kept (these companies) from navigating its course over time. This eventuality have broken companies process and its stream of sustainability.

This is largely eminent in the situation observed in Ogoni where the host community threw Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) out of their community due to ethical negligence, resulting from Shell's reluctance to get involved in the Ogoni Oil spill, clean up exercise.

Adhesion to Ethical Rules and The Leverage

Standing by the rules of ethics in relation to every company and their host will birth a win-win situation for all parties involved. With the host community happy with their relationship with the company as regards how important they are treated, the company enjoys a massively siren environment where their processes can thrive on a plane of sustainability.

Going back to our case study, considering (SPDC) a mega Petroleum multinational giant, that has its treading on an icy floor of irresponsibility as regards the importance of the host community; as such the host community had them thrown out of their jurisdiction (territory) and out of business as well. Going back in time, had (SPDC) taken ethical issues seriously. They would have paid attention to the adverse effect of spillages and most likely followed up with corresponding action (clean up exercise). This would have birthed a high level of trust that the host community would have had invested in the company.

Most likely the company (SPDC) would have remained in Ogoni and stayed firmly in business, with exploration processes on top gear. Or what do you think?
