Fool-Proof Film Photography
Canon EOS 300
Launched right at the turn of the millennium, the EOS 300 was produced by Canon for three years before it was replaced by its digital version the EOS 300D.
Known as the Canon EOS Rebel in America, the digital version was predictably known as the EOS Digital Rebel.
It sold like hot cakes and won numbers awards, understandably because it was/is such a good camera for what it is. So prolific was it, that many people will remember this camera as their introduction to SLR photography.
You can’t compare it to the vintage cameras from earlier decades in terms of build quality and ruggedness - the EOS 300 is a worthless piece of plastic in comparison. When it comes to technology, however, this camera was right in front of the lot. You’d struggle to find a camera with a more accurate light meter from that era, or earlier.
As such, with this camera, you are going to get perfectly exposed photos virtually all the time - except something drastic goes wrong with the electronics. You’re also likely to get all your frames from a roll of film.
A fun feature of this camera is it’s ability to take multiple exposures on the same frame by simply making a quick change in the settings. It will allow up to 9 exposures on the same frame.
Compared to its digital replacement, they are virtually the same camera - one with a film back and the other with a digital back. Canon kept the EF lens mount system in the Digital EOS cameras, so the lenses are compatible, so any of your existing EF lenses will also fit happily on the EOS 300 film SLR.
I recommend this camera to anyone who want’s to venture into shooting film and already has experience shooting a digital SLR. The experience will be seamless. I do also recommend it to the absolute beginner because this camera is totally comprehensive with features ranging from full manual operation to full automatic - at which point you’re using it like a point and shoot camera.
Peace and Love ✌🏿
