The lyrics to the song “Joy to the World” were written as a lark when Hoyt Axton needed quick words for a demo tape that was supposed to highlight the melody he had written. For thoughts he later described as "fun nonsense", they resonated with many people

My Own Lyrics Challenge is going through the years to spotlight cool songs and this post is for 1971. When released by the rock group Three Dog Night, “Joy to the World” quickly went to the Number One position on the weekly charts and was certified Gold in only two months.

It ended up number 1 for the year on the Billboard Hot 100, and is still one of the best-selling singles of all time.

This live video for Three Dog Night playing “Joy to the World" is a 1972 performance on the BBC. Most of the taped performances of that time were lip-synced, and this one seems to be the real thing.
