Ubuntu: I am because we are

Yesterday, I came across an interesting and lesson-ladened story. I couldn't help but share it with everyone who cares to listen and learn. The story later metamorphosed into a discourse in African philosophy.

In a small African village, an Anthropologist organised a game for the tribal children. He placed a basket of sweets near a tree and made the children stand 100 metres away. He told them that whoever gets to the tree first will take all the sweets. What the Children did awestruck the anthropologist. They held their hands together ran to the tree, divide the streets equally and ate them!

The surprised anthropologist asked them why they acted that way. The kids shouted, "Ubuntu!". They in addition said, "how can one be happy when others are sad?"

Ubuntu in their language means "I am because we are".

I feel no greater lesson do we need to learn on the subject of humanity than this. We can do it better together. I think it does not matter the number of Benz we have. What matters more is how many people are happy because of us. In a world where everyone is so much concerned about self, will you choose to be a bit different?

Remember, Ubuntu! It makes no sense to be happy, rich, dazzling and gorgeous while those around you are sad, poor and dying. Let's spread love and happiness everywhere we go by trying to lift others up. Life makes more meaning that way.

Thanks for stopping by.
