Ethereum’s Byzantium Hard Fork will arrive on the 17th of October

The next big Ethereum update is Metropolis. Metropolis is the 3rd stage in 4 for the final release of Ethereum.

• Frontier: Was the first stage.
• Homestead: The actual stage.

• Metropolis: The next stage.

• Serenity: The last and final stage.

Metropolis will be split in two, Byzantium and Constantinople, where Byzantium initial planned for the 9th of October will be done on block number 4,370,000 on the 17th of October.

Initially, Vitalik Buterin wanted to postpone it even longer, at the end of October, but at the start of November there is the Ethereum developer conference and it would be an intersection between the two events.

The ones who use the nodes from Geth are requested to update their software to avoid any problems and have a reliable transition at the time of the hard fork.

The main features that come with this part of the Metropolis hard fork are:

• Zk-Snarks.
• Account abstraction.
• Revert and return data.
• Reduction in Ethereum issuance to miners through block mining rewards from 5 ETH to 3 ETH

Most people are asking themselves if we will have another Ethereum split, like in the case of the hard forks on BTC recently. Most probably no, because the changes have been agreed to a long time ago and it was also planned as a stage in the evolution of Ethereum.

Will the price of Ethereum increase? We can't say, the only thing we can say, is that the last upgrades to the Ethereum network brought positive gains for the holders.

As we don't know what will happen, there is a rule we urge everyone to follow: don't keep your ETH in exchanges at the time of the hard fork, as trading and the wallet will probably be suspended. Keep them in your personal wallet. Most have learned from the Bitcoin hardfork where some exchanges never distributed the resulting Bitcoin Cash.

What we can say is that with these changes Ethereum aims to be much faster and more secure.
