Auctus, Aragon, Golem and others - migration from Slack to Rocket.chat

in #ethereum7 years ago

Today we are announcing the plan of several Ethereum based projects to migrate to the open source messaging platform Rocket Chat.

Because of all the security issues on Slack we’ve decided to join the effort of migrating onto an open source messaging platform in the next week.Projects that will be migrating together as a part of this effort are:

This has been a joint effort from the projects participating in the migration plan. Aragon initially started the proposal for the community after there had already been discussion on the subject from multiple projects. We came together as members of the same ecosystem and community to work on this plan to find an alternative that fit the needs of these cryptocurrency projects. After much discussion and debate upon which open source platform would best fit our needs right now, we came to the conclusion of Rocket Chat being the one for us.For more information about specific project’s migration plan go to their respective announcement for details.

Auctus participation and next steps

At the time that Aragon’s Community Lead Tatu started the discussion about the migration, we were already receiving a lot of phishing messages at our Slack. Since we are about to run a presale security issues are the priority for our team right now, so the timing was perfect to join this effort to migrate to another platform and prevent our collaborator of being robbed during our sale.
To make a decision about which platform we would migrate to we all agreed about choosing an open-source one, so we can all collaborate to make it suit decentralized projects and its needs. After some benchmarking about the available platforms, we came down to 2 options: Riot and Rocket.chat. To help us and everyone else comparing the features and make a decision I’ve built a comparative table of pros and cons where everybody is collaborating and giving improvement suggestions. Finally, we all consulted our collaborators who voted for Rocket.chat.

Recently, projects using the Ethereum network — and blockchain initiatives in general — have been attracting more attention of the public. This is leading to the need of improvements in security and other aspects, that are not yet mastered by all users. We have been trying to follow best practice, by challenging the status quo and constantly trying to improve. The time has come to improve security in our communication channels. The number of phishing attempts on Slack has increased significantly in recent months, which led other projects to react already. We are therefore joining ‘Rocket.Chat’. Not only are we hoping to increase security, but we really believe in open source initiatives and are therefore glad to support them whenever possible.
