all members of the commision, council and parliament are elected one way or the other. commision and council are elected in a more brittish democratic fashion of us voting in the national election who sends representatives to the council. council and paliament elect the commision. people are voted in one way or the other.

most parties in the EU election actually want to stop the turkey refugee agreement which might stop the concentration camps in turkey. parties like Diem25 (democracy in europe) want to extend the power of the parliament, so that the ones who have the most power are the ones you directly elect. also they want to include the public in major decisions. The system the parliament is voted is the same voting system as the german voting system. thats also the most democratic voting system. so why not vote a party that extends the power of the parliament?

the creator of the video CGP grey has serveral videos about different voting systems.

Also I think USSR is a bad comparison. compare it with USA. Believe it or not USA is a bunch of states/countries that got united permanently. USA is the first version of EU. I hope in future that EU would one day also become united permanently. then merkel would be seen as a governeur of a state and the state have serveral counties (bundeslaender) with seperate rulers aswell.

China certainly is a ruthless dictatorship but for poor countries dictatorships can be with the right dictator beneficial. rwanda and singapore are dictatorships and their economic miracle would not have been possible without it beeing a dictatorship. since it is a dictatorship that does not make drastic stupid policies like turkey, it is a stable government that promotes business confidence. if the the improvement of life quality justifies the lack of freedom of speech/press is now an ethical question. taking the utalitarian point of view, if the good done outweighs the harm done it is ok. China however does more harm by far as it has nazi style concentration camps while keeping everyone under blissfull ignorance.

btw Tagesschau posted something that lists a bunch of misconceptions about EU.
