PARENTS PERSECUTED BY THE INFANTILE SERVICES. CHILD PROTECTION SERVICES (CPS).

The main objective of CHILD PROTECTION SERVICES (CPS) is to protect children. But they do not really fulfill their function, all too often, good parents are persecuted by the agency. In some rare but sad cases, children are taken out of the home.

The primary purpose for these agents, is the collection of dollars and euros for children, these are given in adoption without caring about the causes and the future of these children. Enough of these abuses, you must amend all those situations and prosecute those inhumane criminals.

JUSTICE FOR THESE FAMILIES.

Parents Andrew and Bethany Debski, had been accused of abuse after they took their nine-month-old daughter Clarity to the doctor. Clarity had fallen backwards from the bed, landing on her head. At first there were no injuries, but when Bethany went to look after her son that night, she noticed a blow to the head.

THE LIVES OF THE INNOCENT PARENTS WERE CHANGED DRASTICALLY BECAUSE OF THE CPS

The parents did nothing wrong, however their lives turned upside down. They were falsely accused of abuse when they took their baby to the doctor for an accidental injury. Later, they were compared with "dolphins caught in a net". A child abuse doctor at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital (HDVCH) in Grand Rapids, Michigan, actually thanked them for "taking a hard hit for the greater good" of catching the abused and neglected children. They were innocent. Bethany and Andrew Debski did not go to the doctor looking for a blow. They were worried about their baby, and they wanted to make sure she was okay. They never waited for the nightmare of the events that would arise from seeking help. They are victims of a disturbing trend in which it is presumed that parents are guilty until proven innocent. In the world of Child Protective Services, the Constitution seems meaningless, and children and parents are trapped in a network that was originally meant to trap abusive parents who beat, torment and annoy their children. Increasingly, good parents whose children get sick or accidentally injured are being trapped in this costly network, causing even greater injuries and traumas. How many families will be trapped in the network before the system gets more efficient networks, that do not catch the innocent?

DOCTOR LEADS TO THE NIGHTMARE EXPERIENCE

The Debskis saga started on a Thursday night in early April. Bethany was working in a neighborhood restaurant, and Andrew was reading a story before bedtime with his daughters, Clarity, 9 months, and Sadie, 5. Clarity fell backward from her sister's bed, landing on her head on the floor of hard wood. At that time, there were no apparent injuries, but he called his wife anyway. Because Clarity was acting well, Bethany stayed at work and returned home at midnight. The baby did not show any symptoms and fell asleep normally. When her mother came home, the baby woke up to breastfeed, as usual. Bethany noticed a "soft bump", not a chicken egg, on the top of her head where she hit the floor, but that was the only thing that was different. She called the nursing line at HDVCH, and they were advised to watch her, to consult with her doctor the next day. His doctor could not get them until Monday. No one they spoke to seemed too worried, and Clarity's behavior was normal. When the doctor examined her, he did not seem worried. However, after consulting with a colleague, he scheduled an appointment for Debskis to take Clarity to the Metro hospital for a CT scan. Several hours later, his doctor called and said that the CT scan showed a skull fracture. Although he assured them that the baby was getting better, they had to go to a different hospital, HDVCH, for an MRI, he told them. When they arrived, the MRI was never finished. Instead, the staff did full-body x-rays on Clarity; and it quickly became apparent that they were looking for signs of possible abuse. The baby was admitted to the hospital, but no treatment was ordered. Bethany lay down on the bed to nurse Clarity.

CPS TAKES THE BABY FEEDED WITH BREAST MILK FROM A BREASTFEEDING MOTHER

It was then that four police officers, a social worker and others entered the room. They took pictures of the baby and interrogated both parents separately. They did drug tests with saliva on Andrew and Bethany. Andrew's test broke into pieces in his mouth, and then he fell to the floor when he took it from his mouth. The CPS worker put it in the bag anyway. He then informed them that they had a request to take custody of Clarity, and that Andrew and Bethany would have to leave the hospital. Bethany's parents were called to stay with the baby. CPS also sent Sadie to stay with the other group of grandparents.

FALSAS AND ACCUSATIONS

The Bethany drug test was negative. Andrew had informed the CPS worker that he was taking medication for a health problem. I expected him to appear in the test. However, the test could not show the prescribed medication correctly that was definitely in his system, but showed positive results for cocaine, a drug he has never used. Later, the drug tests showed the truth, but he was accused based on a test that had fallen on the ground, one that showed both a false positive and a false negative. The family was in confusion, confused, hurt and angry. A police officer led Bethany home. According to Bethany, he assured them "that everything will end soon, and that situations like this, unfortunately, happen to many wonderful parents that he has witnessed".

INNOCENCE OF PARENTS:

Eventually he straightened up. After 14 hours of separating the exclusively breastfed baby from her mother, Bethany was allowed to be with Clarity. At that time, officials determined that she was not at home when the alleged "abuse" occurred, so she could be around her children again. CPS decided that she and the children should move in with their parents, while Andrew stayed at the family home. The hospital neurologist had assured the Debskis, before all the chaos had happened, that Clarity was fine and that she expected only an improvement. It was later in a hearing that the Debskis knew that the child abuse doctor had reported that her injuries could be life threatening if she were discharged from the hospital. At the hearing on June 19, another doctor reported that Clarity's injuries were consistent with the accident that occurred. The petition for custody of the state was dismissed as unfounded.

FIGHTING TO DELETE THE NAME INCORRECTLY ACCUSED OF CHILD ABUSE

For six weeks, an innocent family suffered incredible turmoil, because they were "like dolphins caught in a net," one designed to catch abusive parents, not the parents of a child who has an accident. However, even then his problems were not over. Andrew's name was included in the National Registry of Child Abuse and Neglect. It was only last month that his name was finally clarified, after months of phone calls and letters. Finally, everything has been deleted from the records. After Debskis sent numerous letters to the congressmen and to the CPS state office, last week they received a phone call from the local CPS, acknowledging that mistakes were made in handling their case and apologizing to them. They told Bethany that they are working to repair the problems within their system. A breastfeeding baby was separated from his mother for more than 12 hours while the system discovered that the mother had not done anything wrong. Bethany was also accused of "not practicing a safe sleep," because the social worker approached her lying next to her baby while he was putting her to sleep. Two groups of grandparents and a small child woke up in the middle of the night, while CPS assigned everyone to the places they wanted.

HOSPITAL ACCOUNTS FOR UNWANTED TREATMENTS REQUESTED BY CPS

To add insult to injury, the hospital that falsely accused them has billed Debskis for the full body scan that was ordered due to allegations of abuse, as well as for the overnight hospital stay. Clarity was not even treated during the hospital stay. Bethany says that some hospital staff seemed more concerned about building a case than about treating Clarity's injuries. HDVCH continues to deny any irregularity. Since Health Impact News began investigating this story, the hospital called Bethany and offered to reduce the bill by half, due to "lack of communication." The Debskis are expected to pay the rest of the bill.

INNOCENT PERSONS HAVE DEFINITELY LIVES DESTROYED BY CPS FOR THE "GREATEST"

The Debskis are sharing their story to show how innocent people can be terribly trapped in the system. The power of CPS is practically unchecked. In this cruel system, parents are guilty until proven innocent, and children pay the price. Bethany says, "Just because it's legal for them to act that way, does not do things right." Although the child abuse doctor compares innocent parents like the Debskis with dolphins trapped in the net, they are not dolphins. They are people: parents who love their children and seek help for them when they are sick or injured. Hundreds of other innocent parents are trapped in this cruel network. Some of them are never released. There is something wrong with a system that believes it is acceptable to destroy good families in the search for abusive families.

While Bethany and Andrew finally maintained custody of Clarity, the couple had to attend the hearings to prove their case, and they kept medical bills for unwanted procedures (full-body x-rays and hospital stays).

Good parents are too often victims of CPS persecution. In some cases, parents can prevent the situation from getting out of control by refusing to allow CPS to enter their home and hire a lawyer. In cases like the Debski family, it can be difficult to protect yourself and your rights.
