Chapter 1 - Beginnings in Colombia

“Corny, really too corny of me.”

Dess may have been an average type of student but his mind was sincerely warped from over-exposure to content that just seemed too fantastical in his eyes.

Surprisingly Dess isn't stupid. He was actually quite smart, enough to understand much of the world and had a lot of common sense. The good, the bad and the just plain useless was absorbed by him throughout his years.

He studied many things as he grew older and had an otaku side to him as well that lead him to love fantasy novels and manga overall. He studied many different aspects of science but only on a superficial level as well as anything related to the multiverse theory hoping to find some loophole in his time on earth to get him out once and for all.
These were his passions in the world. His only real pleasure. Women, money, and fame were but a close second to his fantasy.

He believed somewhere out there was a world similar to his own but that had all the fantasy settings he loved and a system to gaining power like the many stories he loved but surprisingly he knew reality was much crueler than those fantastical stories even if he were to be in another world.

Poor little Dess, infected by the dreams of so many to live in a fantasy that if anyone else were to really see into his head, would run screaming for the hills at his denial for the real world. Psychotic is so close to describing him that he himself had to visit a psychiatric ward at some point just to re-affirm he hasn’t lost his sanity…yet.

It was brushed off as indulging in his fantasies a little more than the norm or so the psychiatrist advised.
He finally convinced himself to take a year off his studies and work after some time as this was a good opportunity as any to take a break from his average day to day life. An adventure to travel the world sounded fun and interesting.

Now, most of you may be thinking he desired an adventure. You are wrong if you think so.

Dess is meticulous only in one aspect of his life. He loved the idea of being reborn into a world where he could harness the powers of magic and fight with swords and discover ancient lands and mythical beasts so much so that he even started chartering his game plan as if he already lived in one.

This trip he decided to take was a huge leap of faith but he knew he would never be able to live a normal life and he wanted to take the risk even if it ended in failure. Which he passionately denied ever happening, the failure that is.

Dess's parents took some hard convincing but they let up and his job was one you can find really easily in this day and age so he had not cared as to leave He saved up for a little while in case of ever needing something so had plenty in storage that should last him for a year at the very least.

“Hehe… It begins. I will definitely find it!”
With a smile Dess set out.

“I may not really know where to go but thanks to the beauty of the internet, I do have a few locations that are worth my personal investigation so let’s start from there.”

The location he wanted to find was an impossible one or at least impossible to everyone who would even hear him. He had never told anyone because, honestly, they would think he had finally lost it.

However, Dess was intent on achieving this goal.

He wanted to find it no matter what. He wanted to do everything in his power to attempt it and if he fails, he can at least say he had failed trying and got to travel as a bonus.

But to him, failure was not an option. Death would be better than failing this journey of his or so he proclaimed but let’s not doubt this youth’s blazing spirit just yet.

With that in mind Dess packed his things, he had only chosen a few items he believed to be necessary and that would make him be able to travel light and some essentials for hygiene.

He and his small pack of essentials had left on one early morning near the beginning of the summer season.

Now you may all be wondering what this goal of his was and some may have figured it out already.

He wanted to be force booted from his world or in other words, he wanted to get himself out of his current 21st century earth without dying…if that makes sense to you.

Indeed. He wanted to find a way and force himself into the world of his dreams through a gate of some sort that he believed would be hidden on his home world.

And yes contrary to popular belief...he finally lost it. Had he told anyone, everyone would have gave him the same response even the people who had similar fantasies as him would have told him he was crazy.

However, Dess was a smart boy but even being a little smart he indulged his imagination into believing this trip would bear fruit.

He had convinced his very existence that he belonged in this other world and so he sought it out as he believed he could make it happen.
All in all, Dess had taken his first step on the road of uncertainty.

His main point of confidence that led him to venture out was that Earth itself has had several mysterious happenings over the course of humanity such as UFO sightings, mysterious disappearances and the history of sudden rise and falls of civilizations that could lead one to believe in a potential way off the earth left behind by some mysterious being if researched and biased enough in the conjectures.

Which may also be the reasoning behind the many conspiracy theorists living in the 21st century.
Dess was young nonetheless and this would be his first time venturing out alone in the world so he was nervous and a little on edge at first.

His first location was in Colombia in the Americas.

He had arrived safely and endured the uncomfortable plane ride as he figured it would be best to simply get started before his fear overcomes him and so rushed on a plane to the closest point of interest he had found in his research.
This area had a very special case of a professor having entered his car near the campus parking lot and vanished with witnesses present at the scene which left everyone stumped as to how this professor could have disappeared especially considering he still hasn’t been found.

Dess, on the other hand, had no idea of knowing what to expect or what to look into so his first stop was a nicely renovated inn that towered two stories high with their own little plot of land that left on thinking of a small stone windmill minus the mill blades.

It was made entirely out of old looking cobblestone with several wood roofs around the building have a nice porch. The whole sceneray itself looked a little out of place with the times but Dess had found it very appealing considering he was used to living near his modern little city.

He strode through the inn doors and walked over to the bar counter near the lobby where a couple of locals and travellers were mingling with their drinks. The smell of tobacco and rum were the most distinct of smells he first noticed upon closing in near the bar counter.

It was still early evening when he had reached the inn and so after having signed in for a room for three days, he headed over to the bar counter.

Seeing Dess close in on the counter, the sly bartender started sizing up Dess and with Dess’s foreign style and well-kept clothing he left the bartender with some expectation of the young lad so he started preparing some decent liquor to entice him with.

The words that came out Dess’s mouth however left him a little stunned before he served him.

“Barkeep! A bottle of your cheapest rum please!”

“...”

“…Y..Yes, one moment young man.”

The locals standing nearby started bursting out in laughter as they saw that old sly barkeep bring his head down in disappointment for a short second before grabbing at a bottle in corner shelve that seemed untouched to the point where you would think his finest bottles were kept there but it seemed that it was their worst sellers having been left in the corner for so long it may have practically become an aged spirit.

‘Hehe, did you think I’d be so dumb to blow all my money on a bottle on my first day here? Think again old man! I’m here to milk you dry for info. Ain’t any way I’m getting ripped off on my first day.’ Dess thought while feeling good about his first words.

After the bartender served him a cold glass from the freezer and the cheapest bottle lying around, he went back to cleaning the cups while letting out a slight sigh.

‘Seems like the old man has some time, I should find out some news here that only locals such as these would know.’

He was a young man who was on an impossible journey yet he treated this inn as a rest stop from some fantasy rpg game. Normally, you would laugh at the thought but surprisingly that mindset is really an effective way to travel.

With a few words to some people sitting nearby, Dess started pouring glasses for the locals while getting them to talk.
He found out a lot about the area from certain places to avoid due to having been recently taken over by some small time gang and some points of interest that a tourist would generally like and even some random gossip about one of the locals and his recent fits of debauchery. It seems people love getting free drinks and it’s not limited to just the women.

‘I should do this more often whenever I visit a new area. This seems to be quite effective and I already know where I should go tomorrow to see what I can dig up on the famed rock on the hill known to have been a gathering point for strange occurrences.’ Dess thought as his bottle came to a finish and he had found it time to head in to get some rest.

After the positive outcome of his first day in the world, Dess came to repeat these actions several times during his stay in many of the countries he visited.
