What is Cebollín or Chives?

It is a highly valued herb and used in kitchens around the world to flavor various types of dishes, this can be used in different ways, I use it as a sauce to prepare some soups, fillings, creams, You can also use minced salads or striped as decoration, among others. By having such a delicious and unmistakable flavor, it is very versatile and worth incorporating into our daily diet.

Chives have hollow cylindrical leaves, and their bulbs are smaller than the bulb of the common onion and their taste is similar to that of young garlic. In my opinion the cebollin is the ideal complement for my dishes, it gives a special touch and a very wonderful spicy flavor to my meals.

How to Plant Chives at Home?

The sowing and cultivation is very simple, when you go to the market and buy chives you should make the most of your purchase; instead of getting rid of the root, try to cut three centimeters above it, put it in water and once you prepare it is land, orchard, pot or place where you are going to plant them, proceed to plant them, this will serve to eat healthier, andto save money because the chives can be grown throughout the year if the growing conditions are appropriate, and the harvest can be carried out at any time, after the leaves have grown .

Considerations for Growing Chives

  • Climate:The ideal temperature for growing chives ranges between 15 and 28 ° C, but can withstand lower temperatures.
  • Luminosity: Chives cultivation requires direct sunlight, for this reason before planting you must choose a place with good lighting, however you can also adapt to shaded areas, as long as you can receive direct sunlight.
  • Soil: Chives need a well-drained soil, fertile and rich in organic matter. It is advisable to keep the soil moist by avoiding excess water and puddles. The very acidic ones are not suitable for seeding onions. The pH of the soil should be 6 or 7 if the chives are to develop well.
  • Irrigation: Regarding irrigation, you have to do it frequently so that the soil stays humid, if you see that the weather is very hot you should water the plant once every day, and once every two or three days if the weather is more wet. It is important to water the chives but avoiding excess water. The adult plant is relatively resistant to short periods of drought.

Process to Plant Chives

• Design and build your idea to take advantage of the space in the garden. And since human beings are very creative, I managed to design in a very original and economical way the perfect place to carry out planting. In my case, as I had cement blocks that were left over from a construction, I used them to create a kind of fencing, which I filled with black soil, compost and rotten wood, ideal for planting.

• I planted the roots or stems of chives in the built garden. I gave him a little water to compact the earth.

• It is necessary to water the crop every afternoon to keep them green and so that the onion can grow.

• Once they have reached an approximate height of 20 centimeters, I cut the amount that I need so that the plant keeps sprouting. For this I use a scissors.

• Chive production can be maintained throughout the year, as long as you keep the soil moist, the chives will grow a lot but you just have to take care of it and water it as I have indicated.
