The secret everyone should know - Why women dress up

in #feminism7 years ago (edited)

Sometimes I get so angry when I hear men talk about women in a bad way. When you are in the club you can hear them say stuff like "Look at her butt", "I'd like to hit that" or "She isn't good enough for me". There are men that think they are superior to all women and they think that they own us. I know there are countries and religions where this is the standard, but I see these things happening all the time here in my own country. You'd think that Finland had come a lot further in this "sexist issue".. But no. There are still some people that think they can treat others in any way they like.

Before I say anything more: I KNOW that also women can treat men badly, but this post is from my point of view as a woman AND there are a lot more guys disrespecting women than the other way around.

What I really wanted to talk about was why we girls like to dress up and look nice. For some it's enough with a nicer pair of pants and a little mascara and some like to go all the way (a tight dress, fake boobs, hairpieces and a lot of makeup). We all wanna look nice when we go out for dinner or for a drink. BUT (back to what I said in the beginning...) there are men that think that we dress up ONLY for THEM?

This is not true. I would never spend money on superficial things to change the way I look only so that some stupid boy would like me. Because I would never wanna be with someone that didn't think I were pretty enough without my dress and my makeup. I guess there are a few women out there that wants to look as good as possible in the hope of getting a nasty rich man to marry her, but this is not the case for most of us.

Of course everybody has their own "excuses" (you don't even need an excuse for wanting to look good..) for dressing up, but I guess that many feel the same way as me. When I go to work, I want to put on some mascara and do my hair so that I look somewhat professional, because I want to be taken seriously at work. When I go out for dinner with my friends, I maybe want to put on a new skirt so I feel comfortable and can show it off to my friends (like, in a good way). When I go to the club I want to look even better so I really can just focus on having fun after that. Because - when I know that I have a nice outfit on, I feel so good being me and my self esteem is really on top!

My biggest point here is that I don't want to look good just so that boys want to stare at me. I want to look good 1. for me, 2. for my girlfriends, 3. for my boyfriend, and LAST for anyone else. I don't care about what someone I don't even know thinks about me and neither should anyone else! Be who you are, dress up when you want to and just enjoy yourself.

PS. I would lie if I said that it's not fun getting a compliment from someone once in a while, but women don't just dress up so that they can get compliments (or complaints!!) from men. We dress up so that we can be ourselves and feel confident. And I would also lie if I said that I didn't do my lips red once in a while just so it would look better on a Instagram-picture... Haha.

Today I'm actually going to dress up really nice since we are going to an engagement/birthday party! It will be so much fun. Happy Saturday everyone!

THANK YOU!!! This is so true and you expressed it perfectly :)

Your post expressed it so deeply, problem is not only with the men problem is the culture. From the beginning of the civilization all men thoughts women are utility for them, and they thought women only prepared to get attention for choosing by men.
This thought is going forward with our civilization.
We got socialized but some of the mentality still carrying the same thoughts.

I also don't think about who says what. I always dressed up as I want to be.

Your posts touches my heart. Thanks for shearing.

You're so right. Hopefully we'll soon live in an equal world... I know it's not happening any time soon, but I wish that my future children already will have it a lot better!
