Lubi- Lubi Festival: A Represenation of Glan's Industry, Culture and Tradition
Every 8th of October, we, Glanians proudly showcase Lubi-Lubi Festival and we also celebrate the town's foundation day. "Lubi" is the Visayan (our dialect) term for coconut. This festival reflects the industry, culture and tradition of the people of Glan. Glan is my mother's hometown and it is known as the "Coconut Queen of the South" because the town's total land area is planted with coconuts which is known as the "Tree of Life" and it is located at the southernmost part of Mindanao. Town folks make living out of it even our ancestors. From the tree's roots to its leaves, the people make money out of it by making beverages, handicrafts to manufactured products. With some being exported and sold out side the country.
Just last Sunday, October 8, 2017, I've got the chance to go home and witness the celebration. Glan successfully celebrated its 103rd Foundation Day and 18th Lubi-Lubi Festival. The festival's Street Dancing Competition is the most awaited part of the celebration where the participants showcase their colorful costumes made from coconut plant material, alluring choreography and lively music. Each group also represent an old religious belief of the people of Glan about the coconut tree, on how it reached the place and how it changed and helped the life of our ancestors. The animistic beliefs were brought to life in choreography by rituals of reverence to the tree as a source of blessings. The winners will receive a cash prize and for the previous years until now, People's Champ/Senator Manny Pacquiao who is a former resident of Glan is said to be the one who's giving the prize. And yes, he was also there at the event and I was glad to see him again since I'm a fan.
!
The celebration really went well and I'm so glad that after 5 years I finally got the chance to witness it again and that was also the first time that I celebrated it with my boyfriend. So next year, if you want to come. You are very welcome to our place and also, one thing that you shouldn't miss is our white sand beaches. There's a place in Glan where it is called the "Little Boracay" and each year, "Sarangani Bay Festival" the biggest beach party in Mindanao is celebrated there every summer.
You can reach the Tour Town Glan, by reaching General Santos City first. Then you go to KCC Mall and just have to ask where can you find the van terminal bound to Glan which is just located beside the KCC Mall. The fare is just 100 pesos or 2$ from General Santos City to Glan Public Terminal. Then, if you're heading to Gumasa beach, there's a vehicle that travels from Glan Public Terminal going to Gumasa for only 50 pesos or 1$. Also, there are a lot of beach resorts in Gumasa that you can choose from. You may also search it on the internet. I guarantee that you will enjoy your stay at our place and hope to see you there as well. By the way thank you for reading and mabuhay!
