To be possessed - Chapter 3 - a story by Giantbear

                              

Joel struggled to fall asleep that night. He tried to watch that movie earlier but his mind kept wandering towards his previous decisions in life.  His parents begged him to study after school to get a proper degree, but he was not interested. He wanted to make something of himself on his own. He decided to take a year off to travel abroad, and that must have been the happiest time of his life. He has never felt that way ever since.  

When he came back he found a job at the bank, and shortly after his parents died in a car accident. They did not leave him much, but there was enough money in his savings account to survive for a few months to find his real path in life. He had been working at the bank for the last nine years, and although it was a steady income and he survived every month, he was stuck in a dead end job and it was driving him absolutely crazy. He just never realized it until now...after the accident. 

He visualized that scene in his head like he has done a million times before. That car landed in front of him and missed his car by two meters. Why? Was that supposed to make him see that there was more to life than just working and surviving? 

He was nearly thirty two years old, and he had done nothing with his life so far. Nothing. Everything around him was falling apart, and he was just one more selfish bastard living on this earth. He knew that he was destined for so much more ... He drifted off to sleep after that last thought, and dreamed of traveling the world and in his dreams he felt happy for the first time in years. 

Joel woke up and his mind immediately went back to his last thoughts the previous night. He was destined to do something more with his life, but he was just not going to find his happiness here. He got up, took a shower and skipped breakfast.  

He put on his jeans and a t-shirt again, and decided not to shave- again. He drove straight to work, and walked straight to the manager's office. His co-workers looked at him as if he was crazy, but when he barged into the manager's office unannounced, he felt like the bravest man in the world. 

"Good morning Joel what can I do for you?" Mr Williams the bank manager said quite startled when Joel bursted into his office. 

"Not much Mr. Williams. I've come to take my life back. I quit." 

He heard Mr Williams mumbling something, but he felt free and relieved when he felt the fresh air on his face when he closed the door to the bank for the last time in his life. 

He drove to the nearest Starbucks, grabbed a cup of coffee and took a seat in the corner outside. He took a sip of coffee and breathed in the aroma of the freshly brewed coffee, and suddenly he started panicking. 

"What the hell did I just do?"  He felt like he was breaking out in hives, and started taking deep breaths to prevent him from hyperventilating. 

"I need to talk to Dr. Madison."  

He dialed the number and the receptionist was able to squeeze him in to see the doctor in a few hours. It felt strange that he was suddenly free to do what he wanted, except, he had no clue what he wanted to do, and the only one that could help him was Dr Madison.
