Capsule Film Review: The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

in #film7 years ago (edited)

Although commercially successful, 2012 superhero film The Amazing Spider-Man is often described as one of the most irritating examples of Hollywood's lack of creativity. It is reboot of successful film series about Spider-Man and its plot is the very same origin story explored in Sam Raimi's 2002 film. New York teenager Peter Parker (played by Andrew Garfield) is bitten by radioactive spider and develops superhuman abilities that would allow him to fight criminals like masked vigilante. Andrew Garfield shows talent in title role, enhanced with good chemistry with Emma Stone (who plays Pete Parker's love interest Gwen Stacy). Unfortunately, director Marc Webb has problems in directing action scenes, that are often uninspired and derivative. Even worse is the script that mishandles trasnformation of Dr. Curt Connors (played by Rhys Ifans) into grotesque monster The Lizard. Although commercially successful, The Amazing Spider-Man indicates that successful reboots like Nolan's Batman Trilogy are more exception than rule in modern Hollywood.
