Amelia: “You are nothing. You're nothing! This is my house! You are trespassing in my house! If you touch my son again, I'll fucking kill you”.

In this world, people may experience various types of tough situations that cause them to have many different psychological problems in their lives and this situation may last for a while. The death of people who we love most is one of those worst experiences leading to heavy psychological problems and destroys our lives in different dimensions.

I didn’t write a complete review before this post, but after I’ve watched this film, I just felt the need. The way to understand this film’s characters is not easy, because it is layered, and somehow, they are mysterious.

This film is about a woman who becomes mentally sick after the death of her husband. Her trauma relates to both her husband’s death after a car crash and Babadook. After the car crash, Amelia gets disturbed by her son and shows that she sees her son as a kind of monster who is the reason for her husband’s death. Actually, she hates him and the character of Amelia shows the dual role of a mother who has the role of a mother and she should be a kind and patient person and an angry woman who hates her only son.

In my opinion, she had a type of fear that all of us experience in our childhood when we are a kid. Moreover, she is accompanying her son on the journey of her fear. At the beginning of the film you see that the mother is reading a creepy story for her little son and when he was sleeping, he sees a nightmare and showing that the mother little by little transmits her fear to the little boy. The storybook is about a monster named “Babadook”, and after reading the book, Amelia and her son feel the presence of Babadook in their house. They both experience nightmares. In Hebrew Babadook means “he is coming for sure”. Babadook is the reflection of her inner hatred. It is the real image of her child and grief, turned into a dark image in her mind.

Amelia follows so many sick routines-every days; she looks sleepy every morning portraying that she lacks proper sleep during the night. Moreover, had a waking call from her son every morning.

little by little Amelia’s son becomes mentally sick and hears some voices. When Amelia gets him to the doctor, the doctor says that her son is suffering from a high level of anxiety.

From the middle of the film, you see that the mental anxiety shows itself by body hurts- for example, Amelia removes her teeth by herself, and I think it shows that she tries more and more to get rid of this mental sickness.

Explanation of the Final Part

In the end, she overcomes all of her bad feelings and accepts her son. In my idea, from a psychological point of view, she had to experience all of those psychological problems, inner conflicts with herself, rejecting her son as a big reason for her husband’s death, and fearing from the Babadook, in order to boost her mental health.

If you are a film lover do not miss this.
Hope you enjoy,
