Six frugal habits to start NOW

in #finance7 years ago

The world is highly commodified, and living anywhere gets costly. We need ways to save money and make the most out of what we already have. Of course, there are non-negotiables, and there are extras. We can cut costs on both if we intend to and if we build better habits that can bring us our desired outcomes. Here are five frugal habits to start now:

1. Cook food at home

While fast food is easy and restaurant food is expensive, home-cooked food allows us to meet our nutritional needs without burning our pockets. If there are concerns with time, we can pre-plan and cook ahead for the next days.

2. Enjoy staying at home and maximize your environment and facilities

Instead of going to malls, we must turn our homes into exciting enclaves where we enjoy doing activities. Have kids? Keep them busy with board games. We can also maximize the parks and facilities such as the library and the sports complex in the community to socialize, learn, and play.

3. Live in a modest home

Tiny living has become attractive to many people over the years. While not all of us can live comfortably in a few square feet, we all have to evaluate how much it takes to maintain our home. We can consider a move to a more modest home in case our present home consumes more than enough of our budget.

4. Use everything up

While it’s easy to find deals and buy stuff in large numbers, we must always make it a point to use everything and consume everything to its last drop. This does not only minimize waste, this can also prevent us from buying something that we don’t yet need.

5. Quality over quantity

Some things come cheap, but they also become useless in too short a time. Invest in key pieces that can last for years. We’ll get the ROI with great use, anyway.

6. Carry just enough cash

We know how credit card purchases can turn into a nightmare once we receive the bills. We should learn to shop with cash. This way, we only buy and pay upfront for what’s necessary.

It takes time to build these habits, but the outcomes can be felt immediately, and our future selves will undoubtedly be grateful for its long-term effects.
