Hello teacher

Am so happy to be a part of this class because am willing to learn new things especially about how to be of help to people and to myself in times of emergencies.

Share your any experience of your life, in which you faced the emergency that could be handled by your own only if you know the basic first response skills

In 2019, on a Sunday afternoon, I was in the kitchen cooking together with my friend. This friend at that time was 32 years old guy.

Some thing strange and scary happened that Sunday afternoon. He was seating directly opposite to me while the food was cooking on fire and we were gisting. I excused my self by standing up to check what was cooking to know if it's fully cooked while we were still gisting.

Immediately,I noticed he was silent , I thought it was because I was checking the food, maybe he was waiting for me to finish before he continues to talk. When I was done, I called him by name and asked him to continue, when I did not get a response, I looked at him and discovered his face was turned towards the wall and his eyes were static. He was frozen.

I was confused and was watching, suddenly he began to fall towards the ground. I screamed with a loud voice and the next thing, he was on the ground foaming. I ran out to call for help.

The people I called came and took him away. He became sick from there and died weeks later. I don't understand what really happened up till now. Most times I blame my self for not knowing what to do that particular day. How I wish I knew what to do maybe he would not have died.

Imagine you are walking back home, when you witness a road traffic accident between a car and a motorcycle, and the motorcyclist is lying on the road, not moving. There’s some bleeding from his leg, and he appears to be unconscious. You being the first responder, how will you manage this scenario?

I will respond based on the standardized Response protocol specifically the DRABC.
D-anger
R-esponse
A-irway
B-reathing
C-circulation

  • Danger- first I observe the environment, making sure its safe for me, the accident victim and the bystanders by looking out for any thing that will serve as dangers such as broken glass from the car or any sharp objects or fire and remove them or shift away from there.

  • Response- The next thing I will do is to check the motorcyclist lying down to see if he is responsive or not. I do this action by tapping his shoulders gently asking him if he can hear me and I reassure him that he will be fine to keep him calm. While I continue to check for other injuries, I quickly ask the people around to call the ambulance asking them to convey how the severity of the accident was so that they can come with their necessary equipments. But if there was no response from the motorcyclist, I move to the next stage.

  • Airway- I ensure that the airways of the motorcyclist and other victims affected are open and clear by doing the following actions. I tilt back the head of the motorcyclist to lift his chin. I also check if the mouth or throat is obstructed or if anything like blood or food is blocking the airways, if any, I carefully remove it.

  • Breathing- I move on to determine if the victim is breathing normally or if he is not. I do this action by looking at his chest to check if it rise and falls, checking if I can hear his breath sound or feel warmth against his cheeks. If he is breathing normally,I place him in a position where he recovers making sure his airways is left open, usually side ways. But if I notice he is not breathing, I definitely would perform CPR which means cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Circulation - I move on to check if there is proper circulation of blood by checking if I can find any part bleeding. I also check the arm and neck region for pulse. I do this by using my 3 fingers on their wrist and my 2 fingers on their neck region. If there is no pulse then I perform CPR. But if I find any severe bleeding, I will apply pressure on it using a clean cloth. I also elevate the injured are so that less blood will be lost.
Draw or Create an engaging illustration/flowchart of DRABC protocol (Try to be creative and don't forget to add your username on the illustration)

QuestionWhat the Student Did WellAreas for ImprovementGrading
Question 1Shared a compelling personal experience, emphasizing the emotional impact and desire to have known first aid, which reflects well on the importance of response skills in emergencies.Additional details about what happened to the friend after collapsing could improve clarity, as would expanding on specific actions that might have helped manage the situation before help arrived. Also, the real question was what would have been different and what actions you would have taken as a first responder in that situation. Good effort overall.[Grade: 1.2]
Question 2Thoroughly explained each DRABC protocol step, demonstrating a solid understanding of how to manage a road accident scene. Please aim to provide detailed explanations for each step, such as what alternative actions could be taken if there are hazards roadside, and how you would manage if any of the DRABC steps cannot be completed. Some aspects of handling the airway and circulation checks could also be clarified. When checking pulse and breathing, remember to avoid excessive movement of the casualty, especially if a spinal injury is suspected. Emphasize gently clearing the airway without unnecessary movement.[Grade: 1.4]
Question 3Created a visual flowchart of the DRABC protocol, including username as per assignment instructions. The visual is good; however, making it clearer and more detailed regarding each step would enhance comprehension. Try to ensure all parts of DRABC are visually represented with brief descriptions for better clarity.[Grade: 1.8]
Question 4Provided a well-rounded list of emergency contacts relevant to Nigeria, covering essential services as required.Adding a brief description for each number's purpose would improve clarity. To make the list even more comprehensive, consider including contacts for mental health support, women's services, child protection, and national suicide prevention.[Grade: 1.1]
Question 5Completed the quiz successfully, showing understanding of the week's lesson.10 out of 10 questions were correct. Good job overall.[Grade: 2.5]

General Feedback:
Overall, your responses reflect a solid grasp of the DRABC protocol, with thoughtful personal experience and careful attention to safety in emergency scenarios. Improving clarity in explanations and details within each response step will further strengthen your submissions. Great job with the quiz and visual presentation!

Thank you.
