Elephant foot yam (Amorphophallus paeoniifolius), or in indonesian (javanese) we called it suweg, is a tropical tuber crop grown primarily in Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia and the tropical Pacific islands, according to Wikipedia.
Generally, corpse flower considered as endangered species. People thinks this status also apply for Suweg.
Thats why, whenever a suweg blooming near some residences, its will became local news.
But, suweg is not an endangered species.
In fact, in some parts of indonesia and other countries, suweg is raised as a cash crop because its potential as vegetables. its tuber weight can reach 5 kg and had been used as a alternative primary ingredient for cake and pastries.
However, this kind of plat not really recognizable as a valuable plants.
Suweg grows wildly in my hometown local cemetery.
Its grows rapidly like its fertilize by the deceased thats been buried there for years.
I've take a few picture of the plants, but I'm actually a little disappointed. Last year, i can easily find more of these flowers spreads in the cemetery.
